A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Over on the heptathlon high jump Jada O’Dowda has cleared her personal best 1.75m but can’t compete with Katerina Johnson-Thompson, Holly Mills, Taneille Crase and Kate O’Connor on the next heights.

Johnson-Thompson clears 1.75 and 1.78 with her first two attempts but knocks off the bar going for 1.81m. She will be wanting to put in a good performance here after coming fifth in the 100m hurdles earlier.

Scotland’s Laura Muir spoke to the BBC following her 800m heat saying:

“That was quick wasn’t it! The women’s 800m is so fast right now but it’s nice to be back in the 800m and to run that little bit quicker.

“It’s been tough [the quick turnaround from the world championships] but I was lucky enough to be at the start of the programme at the World Champs.

“I feel good, I’ve tried to be sensible and I’m just happy to be here really.”

A fantastic partnership of 73 between Amy Jones (36*) and Katherine Brunt (38*) sees England finish on 167-5 from their 20 overs against South Africa at Edgbaston.

It’s a good score and Nat Sciver will be pleased with how her team closed out the innings. Victory for England will put them on the verge of the semi-finals.

Keely Hodgkinson is through to the women’s 800m finals! Scotland’s Jemma Reekie finishes third but her time isn’t quick enough for her to qualify.

Qualification for the women’s 800m final isn’t easy and there are a few competitors that could challenge. Alex Bell and Laura Muir take part in the second heat.

Muir positions herself in the middle of the group after the first lap with Bell just off the front. Inside the final 200m and Muir moves ahead of her English opponent.

Muir finishes second behind Jamaica’s Natoya Goule - who lead from the front - with Alex Bell holding off Canada’s Lindsey Butterworth to come third.

She’ll have a wait to see if her time is enough to get her into the final but it was a quick one - under two minutes - and she’ll be confident.

England are floundering against South Africa. Alice Capsey brought up her 50 but three quick wickets have seen England fall to 94-5.

There was also a horrendous run out after a mix up between Amy Jones and Maia Bouchier. Jones is joined at the crease by the experience Katherine Brunt.

There are seven overs left in England’s innings. What kind of total can they set?

England are going for bronze in the men’s table tennis team event. They’re facing off with Nigeria and have started well.
