Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Gymnastics

One of Joe Fraser’s biggest rivals for the parallel bars gold is the defending champion Marios Georgiou.

It’s a brilliant routine from the Cypriot but it’s not good enough. He scores a big 14.533 to put him into second place.

It’s a 12.933 for Alice Kinsella. That’s enough to put her in the silver medal position behind Australia’s Georgia Godwin.

A good comeback after her fall in the all-around competition on Sunday.

A big wobble from Alice Kinsella on the balance beam almost derails her routine but she manages to hold it and get going. The rest of the routine is strong and she manages to pull off the landing.

That wobble is going to cost her though and she may not overhaul Georgia Godwin.

It’s massive! Joe Fraser is awarded a 15.000 for his routine on the parallel bars. He’s looking at another gold medal right now.

For any of the other gymnasts to beat him, they’ll need to be perfect.

Joe Fraser take a bow! He’s going all out for gold with a tricky routine on the parallel bars. His technique is so strong and - despite having a broken foot - smashes his landing!

That could be another gold medal winning routine from the Englishman.

Sofia Micallef’s score for the balance beam comes in at 12.500. It’s not enough to put her ahead of Georgia Godwin.

Very nice from Sofia Micallef!

She wobbles a bit after an unaided cartwheel but manages to regain her balance before ending the routine brilliantly and landing the dismount.

That’s a good routine from the Welsh star.

Georgia Godwin lays down a marker on the women’s balance beam. The all-around champion nails her routine and lands the dismount expertly.

This will be a good score.

It is. 13.433 for the Australian.

Two more gymnastics finals will begin shortly in the arena.

Birthday boy Giarnni Regini-Moran, who just claimed silver in the men’s vault, chases another medal in the parallel bars whilst Birmingham’s own, Joe Fraser, targets the a medal too. Wales’ Brinn Bevan is also in the final.

Another product of Birmingham, Alice Kinsella, bids to defends her Commonwealth title in the balance beam alongside compatriot Georgia-Mae Fenton and Welsh teenagers Jea Maracha and Sofia Micallef.

Keely Hodgkinson looks to emulate school-mate Ella Toone’s Euro 2022 exploits at Commonwealth Games

Keely Hodgkinson had the nickname ‘Mini Ella’ at school after Lionesses star Ella Toone – now she wants to match the exploits of the Euro 2022 champion.

Manchester United forward Toone scored England’s opener at Wembley on Sunday as they were crowned European champions for the first time after years of heartache.

She and Hodgkinson go back all the way to their time at Fred Longworth High School in Tyldesley near Wigan, close friends despite being two years apart.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - T20 Cricket

England defeat South Africa!

Nat Sciver’s women win by 26 runs. Alice Capsey’s half-century and a big partnership between Amy Jones and Katherin Brunt got England up to 167 from their 20 overs.

South Africa weren’t able to match it despite a decent innings from Laura Wolvaardt who finished 41 not out. They end their innings 141-4.

England have won both of their opening fixtures and can qualify for the semi-finals later today if other results go their way.
