Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

The excitement from the men’s cross-country is coming in the battle for bronze. New Zealand’s Sam Gaze will claim gold as he’s 42 seconds in front of team-mate Ben Oliver who’ll finish with a silver should he make it around the course.

Behind them Namibia’s Alex Miller has caught up with England’s Joe Blackmore and Northern Ireland’s Cameron Orr to create a three-way shootout for third as the riders begin the final lap of the course.

The men’s 400m heats are well underway with world bronze medallist Matthew Hudson-Smith in action in the fourth race. The Englishman sets out in front and crosses the line at little more than a jog to cruise to victory.

Wales’ Joseph Brier is also through as he safely crosses the line in third to reach the semi-finals.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - T20 Cricket

Australia are takign on Pakistan at Edgbaston in their final group game of the T20 cricket. Aussie batters Beth Mooney and Tahlia McGrath piled on the runs with a third-wicket partnership of 141 to finish on 160-2 from their 20 overs.

McGrath came to the crease with Australia on 19-2, and struck 78 off 51 balls - assisted by Mooney’s 70 from 49 - to turn the early nerves into a confident finish.

Pakistan, who are bottom of the group, will have to chase down their biggest score of the tournament if they are to win. Australia are on the brink of the semi-finals.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Mountain biking

New Zealand’s Sam Gaze has moved clear of his team-mate Ben Oliver and can take his time over the technical rocky sections of the course.

Charlie Aldridge’s technical failure has spurred Cameron Orr on and he’s pushing up to catch Joe Blackmore. He senses the chance to win a bronze medal.

Oh no! Charlie Aldridge has a mechanical failure after falling on one of the bends. His race is over as the right pedal has completely come off.

It’s not fixable as the tech zone is over a kilometre away. England’s Joe Blackmore is now in the bronze medal position behind the two New Zealanders.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Mountain biking

Just north of Birmingham is Cannock Chase Forest which has been given a major upgrade to host the mountain bike cross-country events for this year’s Commonwealth Games.

In 2018 the women’s race was won by Annie Last in an England one-two ahead of Evie Richards with New Zealand pulling off the same feat in the men’s edition.

Last isn’t competing this time around so Richards is the favourite for the women’s event which kicks off this afternoon. First up is the men’s competition with the current leaders being New Zealanders Sam Gaze and Ben Oliver.

Scotland’s Charlie Aldridge, England’s Joesph Blackmore and Northern Ireland’s Cameron Orr chase behind.
