A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Ben Pattison gave his reaction to the BBC following his win the the thid heat of the men’s 800m saying: “I’ve said I’ve never been that nervous but I think that’s raised the bar because the crowd were amazing.

“When I kicked, I heard the roar and I thought I’ve just got to keep going for home now. The crowd distracted me from the pain in my legs so it was crazy and I loved it!

“I can’t get my head around it! I’m still only 20, I’ve never been to a major games before.”

The javelin is going to be so important to determine who’s going to win the heptathlon gold.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s total is up to 4718 points, 122 points clear of compatriot Jade O’Dowda.

Australian Taneille Crase is third on 4525 points, just 15 above England’s Holly Mills.

Northern Ireland’s Kate O’Connor has dropped from second to fifth and sits above team-mate Anna McCauley and Wales’ Lauren Evans.

England’s Ben Pattison makes it through to the men’s 800m final by finishing first in the third and final heat. Peter Bol’s 1:47.01 was the quickest time of the heats and the Australian is the man to beat later on.

Also through is England’s Jamie Webb and Scotland’s Guy Learmonth.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson’s second place in the heptathlon long jump means she stays out in front ahead of the javelin and 800m later today.

Jade O’Dowda has flown up to second place and trails KJT by 122 points. The final two events are going to be exciting. Johnson-Thompson isn’t the greatest javelin thrower so there is an opportunity there to catch up to the reigning champion.

Scotland’s Guy Learmonth and England’s Jamie Webb spoke to the BBC after qualifying for the men’s 800m semi-final with Learmonth saying: “This year has been so rough for me with Covid and injuries. I’ve missed a lot of training and races but I’m here and I’m in the semi-final.

“It’s my third games and I want a place on that podium. Medals are all that has been missing from my career.”

Webb added: “I’ve not had the best of years but you’ve got to take the opportunity when you get it. I’ve not been terrible this year but I’ve not been great either.

“I have high expectations of myself and I feel good. It’s a home games and the crowds are incredible.

“It’s not a coincidence that the two home nations got through because it wasn’t an easy heat.”

Holly Mills’ final attempt in the long jump sees her improve to finish with a 6.19m distance. It’s not a terrible effort by any means but she would have liked to have gotten slightly further especially with Jade O’Dowda set to fly up the rankings.

The men’s 800m heats get started. England’s Jamie Webb and Scotland’s Guy Learmonth are competing in this opening race.

The first two to cross the line go through automatically and it’s the home nations boys who manage it. Webb ends the race brilliantly with a kick down the final 100m with Learmonth tracking just behind him.

It wasn’t a particularly quick race but Webb gets it done.

Jade O’Dowda’s jump of 6.5sm is still the time to beat as she fouls on her last effort. It’s a lifetime best effort from the Englishwomen and puts her in the top spot for this event.
