Ashley McKenzie describes how he won judo gold medal at the Commonwealth Games

A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Australia are closing in on victory and a spot in the semi-finals. If they win this match - which is a certainty - they’ll top their group and should have an easier match in the next round.

Pakistan are 90-7 with two overs remaining. They need 71 off 12 balls.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Mountain biking

Coming up at 2pm is the start of the women’s cross country race.

England’s reigning world champion Evie Richards starts as favourite in a weakened field though back problems and a bout of Covid have affected her form this season.

Can she overcome these issues to claim a medal, preferably of the gold variety?

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Women’s hockey

India have beaten Canada 3-2 in their final Pool A match of the women’s hockey to advance to the semi-finals.

A brilliant battle between the two sides saw goals in each quarter but it ultimately fell the way of India who join England and Australia in the next round.

Defeat for Canada means they will play in the Fifth Place Match.

Joe Fraser hails ‘wonderkid’ Jake Jarman as England’s gymnasts rule at Commonwealth Games

Joe Fraser believes the Commonwealth Games have given the world a glimpse of the next gymnastics superstar.

Jake Jarman has certainly come a long way since he was talent spotted in a Peterborough-park swinging from the monkey bars.

He was just seven years old when his gymnastic prowess caught the attention of a passing coach, the sort of scouting performance a Premier League football club would crave.

The 20-year-old added vault gold to his podium topping performances in the team event, all-around competition, and floor final.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Mountain biking

It’s a New Zealand one-two in the men’s cross-country mountain biking. Sam Gaze finishes with a rapid time of 1:34:19 over 30 seconds ahead of his team-mate Ben Oliver.

Both were favourites to compete for the title so perhaps the ride of the day belongs to Namibia’s Alex Miller.

He’s +2:01 back from Gaze’s gold medal time but manages to push in front of England’s Joe Blackmore and Northern Ireland’s Cameron Orr to claim bronze!

It’s Namibia’s first ever cycling medal.
