A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.

Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.

Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.

Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.

In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Mountain biking

Evie Richard’s slips on a tight, slippery corner over the grass and comes off the bike. She manages to hold on and remount quickly but that’s going to cost her some time.

It does. She’s only 26 second ahead now.

Zoe Cuthbert of Australia is currently in the silver medal position after confidently making her way through the pack. Two laps to go.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Weightlifting

England’s Emily Campbell is among the favourites to win gold in the +87kg category that is about to get underway at the NEC.

She has two European golds, a world championship bronze and became the first British woman to win an Olympic medal in weightlifting when she won silver in Tokyo.

Can she add a Commonwealth medal to her tally?

Commonwealth Games 2022 - T20 Cricket

England’s cricket captain, Heather Knight, will not feature during the rest of the Commonwealth Games nor will she feature in the ECB’s franchise tournamen The Hundred this summer.

Knight suffered a hip injury in the international T20 series against South Africa just prior to the games and has not recovered. Nat Sciver will continue to captain the squad for the duration of the Games.

Commonwealth Games 2022 - Mountain biking

This is already a brilliant rode from Evie Richards who continues to extended her lead out front. The other riders may already be settling for the silver and bronze medals.

Most use the main straight to get sustenance and take on energy gels before reaching the start of the next lap. Richards’ lead is up to 40 seconds.

South Africa’s Candice Lill, Scotland’s Isla Short and Australian Zoe Cuthbert are the nearest pursuers.

Natalie Metcalf focused on New Zealand after England’s netballers see off Uganda

England netball captain Natalie Metcalf is raring to go against New Zealand after her side maintained their unbeaten start to the Commonwealth Games with a 56-35 win against Uganda.

The reigning Commonwealth champions now have four wins from four games and will take on the Kiwis in their final Pool B match after a tricky challenge against Uganda on Tuesday.

Although the score stood at 25-15 in England’s favour at half-time, the Roses benefitted from some fresh faces after the break and an impressive third-quarter performance saw them extend their lead to 40-24.

They then went on to wrap up the game comfortably, and Metcalf admitted rotation made a big impact.

Hannah Cockroft fulfils ultimate legacy in wheelchair racing after beating ‘stacked lineup’

The set is complete for Hannah Cockroft whose legacy in wheelchair racing will likely never be topped.

The Paralympic, world and European champion added Commonwealth gold to her incomparable collection to close out the opening night of action in the athletics at Birmingham 2022.

And in a career that has seen her win everything there is to win, the long-term impact of this win, part of an English clean sweep along with Kare Adenegan and Fabienne Andre, may end up being second only to London 2012.

‘Wounded lion’ Adam Peaty roars back to win redemptive 50m breaststroke gold

Adam Peaty apologised for “disrespecting” the Commonwealth Games and swam through the storm to 50m breaststroke gold.

The wounded lion bit back to take victory and get his paws on the only major title that has eluded him.

Before last month’s broken foot, defeat to Cameron van der Burgh at Gold Coast 2018 was the biggest setback of his career.

The 27-year-old responded by completing the career set of breaststroke titles, leading from block to wall to take victory in a time of 26.76.
