Follow day 10 at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with 45 gold medals up for grabs
A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.
Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.
Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.
Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.
In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

Katarina Johnson-Thompson is buzzing! She has set a lifetime best in the javelin to lead the heptathlon by 136 points ahead of the 800m.
She has launched her effort 43.93m, topping her previous best set in the World Championships in 2019.
Northern Ireland’s Kate O’Connor, who was in second place, sets the best mark but Johnson-Thompson’s lead should be too much from here.

Gold for Northern Ireland! Bethany Firth has won Northern Ireland their first gold medal of the Games in the S14 200m freestyle.
“I’m so glad that my family could be here to watch me as they couldn’t make Tokyo,” Firth says. “I’m delighted it all came together.”
She got married in between the World Championships and the Commonwealths. What a year!

“Rivalry, friendship, we love a race and get the best out of each other,” Scott tells the BBC. He’s won 12 Commonwealth medals now. “That’s a lot of races. My body is hurting.”
“Sixth silver medal, it’s incredible,” Dean says. “I’ll go for a seventh in the relay. But what a great week. Dunc got the best of me tonight but we’re getting the best out of each other.
“It’s what the sport needs, great rivalries. I can’t wait unitl Paris now and for the home nations to be reunited.”

Scott took bronze behind Dean in the 100m free on Monday, but won gold in a brilliant 200m free final on Sunday as he got revenge on Dean’s silver in Tokyo.

There was no sign of the back injury or multiple illnesses that have plagued the world champion over the last six months as she rode clear on the first of the seven laps around Cannock Chase forest to improve on the silver she took in Gold Coast four years ago.
There was one scare with two laps to go when she slid on a corner and had to remount but that was the only moment in the 95-minute race where a Richards win looked in doubt.

Heather Knight to miss the rest of the Commonwealth Games and The Hundred through injury
England captain Heather Knight has been ruled out of the rest of the Commonwealth Games and will also miss The Hundred this season because of a lingering hip problem.
Knight suffered the injury during the Twenty20 opener in England’s multi-format series against South Africa a couple of weeks ago and had an injection before the Games to try to soothe the troubled area.
However, an England and Wales Cricket Board spokesperson has confirmed the issue has “failed to settle down as expected” and Knight is now facing an extended period on the sidelines.
