Follow day 10 at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with 45 gold medals up for grabs
A thrilling penultimate day at Birmingham 2022 has delivered more action to this thoroughly entertaining Commonwealth Games, with 45 gold medals in total set to be dished out by the end of the evening.
Tonight was all about Laura Muir, and the Scotland star produced a brilliant kick to win gold in the women’s 1500m final, adding to her 800m bronze from the previous evening. Later, a wide-open men’s 800m final, was won by Kenya’s Wyclife Kinyamal ahead of Australia’s Peter Bol, with England’s Ben Pattison taking bronze.
Eilish McColgan added to her 10,000m gold with a gutsy silver in the 5,000m and there was further joy as England’s women wrapped up the action at the Alexander Stadium with a dramatic gold in the 4x400m final. It was short lived, however, after the team was disqualified following a lane infringment.
Earlier, home-town hero Matt Hudson-Smith was left disappointed when forced to settle for silver in the men’s 400m, while Victoria Ohuruogu was more upbeat, grabbing a silver in the women’s 400m final. There was drama in the 4x100m relay finals, with England men and Nigeria women prevailing.
In the afternoon, a dramatic men’s cycling road race saw Geraint Thomas fall just short with a late push to break the lead group, leaving New Zealand’s Aaron Gate to sprint clear and win a fourth gold at these Games. And in the result of the day, England pulled off a shock to stun Australia and win Commonwealth gold in the women’s hockey final. Follow all the action throughout the evening below:

The defending champion is 122 points ahead of England’s Jade O’Dowda after the long jump on Wednesday morning in Birmingham.
O’Dowda posted a leap of 6.52m to earn 1014 points compared to Johnson-Thompson’s best effort of 6.33m.
It means Johnson-Thompson maintains a slender advantage ahead of the javelin, one of her weaker events, and the final 800m on Wednesday evening.

They couldn’t have done more to hype up Emily Campbell’s entrance to the Commonwealth Games.
The flamboyant England flagbearer was greeted by weightlifting’s first-ever live DJ set and a frenzy of fluorescent wristbands that turned green to celebrate good lifts.
The women’s 87+kg competition was preceded by a local school choir singing an uplifting song dedicated to legendary lifter Precious McKenzie.

In one of the most one-sided competitions of the Commonwealth Games so far England’s Emily Campbell demolished the field in the women’s weightlifting to claim the gold medal and title of Commonwealth champion.
She spoke after her victory saying: “I’m absolutely elated I knew this would be a tough competition, I knew someone was not going to hand it to me on a plate, I knew I would have to work for but I said, ‘whatever I needed to lift today to win that gold medal, I was going to do it’.
“I hope people see how beautiful our sport is. Throughout the week you have seen it doesn’t matter what you look like, what shape you are, what size you are, you can pick up a bar and do it. It is not about coming to the Commonwealth Games or coming to the Olympics it is is about doing something you love.
“We’ve been in the training hall in the back and we’ve heard the crowds all week and it has been mad, absolutely immense. There was a full house today and the flashing of the wristbands and everything has been immense. It is very nice to see actual fans coming to see weightlifting, it is all we have ever wanted.”

It was very comfortable in the end. Wales were seemingly in a tense and tricky match against Ghana who stuck with them until half-time with the match poised at 1-1.
The fitness and determination of the Welsh team shone through, two goals in the third quarter put them firmly in front and they dominated the fourth to score three more times.
They win the game 6-1, but stay third in Pool B behind India and England.

Scotland have a fourth gold medal of these Games and it’s come in Leamington Spa.
Rosemary Lenton and Pauline Wilson overcome their Australian opponents 17-5 in the para women’s Pairs B6-B8 final. Lenton is one of the oldest competitors in Commonwealth Games history at 72 and now she’s the proud owner of a gold medal.
The pair have a combined age of 130. What an achievement!
