From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

One dramatic episode in and there's already people being 'muggy', 'salty' and 'extra', just some of the unique words you can expect to hear.
Here's everything you need to know about what went on in episode one.
Need a reminder of who’s heading to the luxury villa in Majorca, Spain? Then flick through the gallery below, which holds snippets of information on each of the eleven tanned, toned, and tattooed contestants.
This year’s Love Island will be the longest season of the show so far, this year’s 150,000 applicants being told they would need to be available for a minimum of ten weeks for the series.
Caroline Flack – who will once again be hosting – previously said this series will be the “longest yet”. Ian Sterling will also be returning as the voice of Love Island.
Some other tidbits of information: while unconfirmed, the contestants (many of whom leave their jobs or take extensive leave to be on the show) get paid a rumoured £200 a week for participating.
ITV2’s popular spin-off show Aftersun also returns this year, while the channel has also launched a podcast series named The Morning After.

Lots of platform high heels being worn. Feels like a disaster waiting to happen with all that slippery pool decking everywhere.
While there's a (probably welcome) advert break, here's first time viewer Sean O'Grady with his take on the first episode so far:
"They’re 'bubbling over' already - how can they keep this up?? They’ll be drunk and asleep by 10pm. Won’t they? Hayley knows the Spansih for prawns. I don’t. Feeling inadequate already."
It's our first coupling up time and Kendall has stepped forward for Niall, the first man of the villa.
And it's a match! Although he had a choice of all the women, Niall has chosen to couple with Kendall, the first couple of Love Island 2018.
The Independent's own Christopher Hooton seems to have the dream set up...
The second male contestant is here, Alex the A&E doctor, and no one has stepped forward for him!
But that hasn't stopped him. He has chosen to couple with Laura, and to be honest it is all incredibly awkward.
Another comment from our first time viewer, Sean O'Grady.
"Just waiting for one to go for the different option of short, balding and challenging."
I think you might be waiting for a while, Sean.
New man in the villa, Wes, has already said one of Love Island's top catchphrases: graft.
In case you're a newbie to this epic piece of television, it means working hard to pick someone up. Classy, right?
In scenes more dramatic than anything you'd see in The Soprano's, Wes has coupled with Laura, even though Alex 'chose' her.
We're struggling to cope with the tension here.
