A yellow ice warning covering southern England, the Midlands and eastern Wales remains in effect until 10am today, with the forecaster advising vehicles could be stranded and power cuts widespread.
Continued wintry hazards are likely throughout the week, with roads becoming icy if untreated, the forecaster added.
Snow showers, some accompanied by lightning, began last evening and are expected to persist this morning. Accumulations may exceed 10cm over higher ground, with up to 20cm predicted in mountainous areas of Scotland by the end of the week.
“This will feel like the first taste of winter for many, with the snow and ice risks layered on top,” said Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon, noting that even a few centimetres of snow on lower ground can disrupt travel.
On Tuesday, the cold weather led to closure of over 140 schools mid, north-east, and south-east Wales, affecting areas such as Wrexham, Powys, Denbighshire, Flintshire, Torfaen, and Blaenau Gwent.

Morning commuters set for disruption after parts of country see heavy snowfall
Commuters face widespread travel disruption this morning after parts of the UK saw heavy snowfall and ice.
The Met Office put in place a yellow warning for ice for much of southern England, the Midlands and eastern Wales from 5pm yesterday to 10am today.
Several other warnings for snow and ice have been in force across the UK, with the Met Office advising that vehicles could be stranded, power cuts may occur and rural areas could be cut off.
The forecaster warned of snow showers developing yesterday evening and continuing overnight into this morning. The showers may be heavy at times and accompanied by lightning in some areas.
Some lying snow could reach up to 10cm or more over higher ground and ice is expected to form on untreated surfaces.
Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon previously told the PA news agency: “We’ve had a fairly mild November so far.
“So it’ll feel like that first taste of winter for many with that snow and ice risk layered on top.”
He added: “The highest accumulations are likely over the mountains in Scotland, where over higher ground you could see around 20cm of snow through this week accumulating on the ground.
“They are not necessarily the most disruptive snowfalls, but it only takes a couple of centimetres on lower ground to cause some level of travel disruption.”

The UK is braced for more snow as the Met Office warned of further travel chaos across the country.
Up to 20cm of snow is set to fall in some parts of Wales, northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland with icy conditions expected across the country.
It comes after motorists faced disruption and train services were cancelled with more than 200 schools forced to close yesterday.

Cold weather ‘particulary challenging’ for dementia patients
The Alzheimer’s Society warned that cold weather can be “particularly challenging” for people with dementia.
“Colder temperatures can be difficult for a person with dementia to adjust to, and they may not always be able to communicate that they are cold - or they may not even recognise it themselves,” the charity said.
Another charity, Asthma + Lung UK, urged those with lung conditions to be “extra careful”.
The charity warned cold weather can trigger potentially life-threatening asthma attacks or “flare-ups” for people with other lung conditions.
Weather warnings issued in Northern Ireland and Scotland
A yellow warning for snow and ice has also been issued for Northern Ireland from 6pm yesterday to 10am today, with a separate warning also in place across most of Wales and parts of the West Midlands until 10am this morning.
Police in Northern Ireland urged those on the roads to “drive with extra caution while we experience the freezing temperatures as forecast”.
There are also snow and ice warnings in place covering the north of Scotland until 10am today and parts of western Scotland.
The Met Office said cold northerly winds will continue through the week across much of the UK, with further warnings likely.
It added that temperatures were likely to increase from the south-west this weekend, though this will be accompanied by some strong winds and heavy rain.

There are a number of yellow weather warnings in place for snow and ice in place across large swathes of the UK currently.
Scotland
In northern Scotland, there is a yellow warning for snow and ice in place until 10am on Wednesday.
In western Scotland, a yellow warning for snow and ice is in place from 7pm on Tuesday until 10am on Wednesday.
England
There is a yellow warning for snow and ice along the east coast of Scotland and England from Berwickshire to Suffolk until midday on Wednesday.
Much of southern England - including London- the Midlands and eastern Wales are also facing yellow warning until 10am on Wednesday.
Wales
The majority of Wales and part of the West Midlands are under a yellow weather warning for snow and ice until 10am on Wednesday.
Northern Ireland
A yellow warning for snow and ice has also been issued for all of Northern Ireland from 6pm on Tuesday to 10am on Wednesday.
