Why can’t the King’s birthday honours list recognise individuals who have given exceptional outstanding service to the arts, science and community or charities?
Every season these lists are trotted out with the usual famous, well-connected recipients taking their turn and getting their “top end” gongs, while unsung heroes from the lower orders get the lesser accolades.
Being given a peerage seems to have become a rite of passage for the upper echelons of footballers, fashionistas, showbiz TV presenters and civil service mandarins, but there isn’t a cat in hell’s chance of being a “Sir” if you’ve been selflessly feeding thousands of destitute people from a foodbank.
