Ciryl Gane capped off a historic night for French mixed martial arts by sending his fellow Parisians into raptures on Saturday, knocking out Tai Tuivasa in the main event of the UFC’s first ever trip to the City of Light.
Gane showed off his technical abilities – almost unrivalled in the heavyweight division – in the first round, but had to survive a heavy knockdown from Tuivasa in an enthralling second frame to earn a crucial win. It was in the third round that Gane broke down the Australian with body kicks that set up kicks and punches to the head of Tuivasa, a flurry of which put away the tourist to spark ecstasy in the Accor Arena. The result saw 32-year-old Gane, who has only been competing in MMA for four years, bounce back from the sole defeat of his professional career so far – a decision loss to former teammate Francis Ngannou in January.
In the co-main event, Robert Whittaker similarly bounced back from a title-fight defeat, outpointing Marvin Vettori with a clinical performance in the pair’s middleweight showdown.

Final round! Both men are light on their feet. Whittaker just misses with a counter right straight.
Front kick to the body by Whittaker, who then narrowly evades a left straight from Vettori.
This time Vettori just about lands one. Now Whittaker finally gets a head kick all the way through!
Vettori is slightly wobbly, and his left cheek is cut... Whittaker tries a head kick again, and Vettori ducks into it – catching a knee on the top of the head.

Another hard right straight from Whittaker, then a head kick that is blocked but seems to hurt Vettori somewhat...
Whittaker tries for another head kick but doesn’t quite gauge the distance properly. The “Reaper” is picking up the pace now, however.

Vettori misses with a head kick. Oblique kick to the knee from Whittaker, then a front kick to the body. He sees a head kick blocked.
A right straight lands for the former champion, though! More front kicks to the body from the Aussie.
Vettori tries a series of punches but is too far away from Whittaker. And again the Italian is out of range.

Vettori is starting to land his left hand with increasing frequency. Front kick to the body from Whittaker.
Vettori clinches Whittaker and drags him to the fence. The Italian is the stronger man, but both are good grapplers. Whittaker gets free.
Inside low kick from Vettori lands on the thigh of Whittaker.
