Ciryl Gane capped off a historic night for French mixed martial arts by sending his fellow Parisians into raptures on Saturday, knocking out Tai Tuivasa in the main event of the UFC’s first ever trip to the City of Light.
Gane showed off his technical abilities – almost unrivalled in the heavyweight division – in the first round, but had to survive a heavy knockdown from Tuivasa in an enthralling second frame to earn a crucial win. It was in the third round that Gane broke down the Australian with body kicks that set up kicks and punches to the head of Tuivasa, a flurry of which put away the tourist to spark ecstasy in the Accor Arena. The result saw 32-year-old Gane, who has only been competing in MMA for four years, bounce back from the sole defeat of his professional career so far – a decision loss to former teammate Francis Ngannou in January.
In the co-main event, Robert Whittaker similarly bounced back from a title-fight defeat, outpointing Marvin Vettori with a clinical performance in the pair’s middleweight showdown.

Some predicted that Gane would win an uneventful five-rounder, or that Tuivasa would get an early knockout; no one predicted this...

The crowd is going wild. Tuivasa applauds the fans in Paris. Everyone is standing in the Accor Arena.
The heavyweight strade teep kicks to the body. Good head movement from Gane, before he lands a piercing jab.
Tuivasa suggests he was kicked too low, around the cup, but Gane teases him that the strike was legal. Referee Marc Goddard agrees, and the trio laugh about it.
Gane is landing punches clinically now. Tuivasa stumbles into the fence then comes forward again.
More brutal body kicks from Gane, who then kicks high! It wobbles Tuivasa! Gane with a front kick to the head, and Tuivasa stumbles again!
But the Australian goes hell for leather in an attempt to fire back!

Tuivasa shakes off a takedown attempt. He clips Gane with a wide right hook, and the Frenchman collapses against the fence!!!
Gane does well to stand, recover, and get back behind his jab, but Tuivasa is stalking him and landing right hands!
Gane lands two brutal body kicks then a knee to the body, but he eats a left hand! This is wild!
Tuivasa’s cut has really opened up. He’s been hurt by the body kicks.

“This is your money round, this is where you catch people,” Tuivasa is told by his coach.
Gane jabs to the body then kicks low. He’s staying just out of range of Tuivasa. Gane barely misses with a front kick aimed at Tuivasa’s head.
The Australian grazes the hometown heavyweight with a left hook. Gane replies with a couple of stabbing front kicks to the body.
Tuivasa appears to be sporting a cut just under his right eye. He seems to be getting frustrated now. He walks onto a counter left straight from Gane, who is southpaw right now.

The crowd is getting right behind Gane, jumping up and down and shining their phone lights. Can Gane stay calm, though, and stick to his gameplan?
Tuivasa appears to land a harsh right hook. Whenever he throws, he throws with bad intentions. Gane almost lands a head kick, but it’s largely blocked.

Now Tuivasa misses with a body kick, before Gane jabs a front kick into his opponent’s body. Then the Frenchman drives a roundhouse kick into the mid-section of Tuivasa.
Gane keeps switching stances. The heavyweights are trading low kicks.
