Wimbledon 2018: Five contenders to win

Wimbledon 2018 - day three: Order of play, prize money, how to get tickets, everything you need to know.

Today sees the second round begin at The Championships.

Serena Williams is in action on Centre Court, with Karolina Pliskova opening play against Victoria Azarenka. Carolina Wozniacki and Venus Williams are meanwhile in action on Court One, while Agnieszka Radwanska’s match against Lucie Safarova is not to be missed.

Roger Federer will of course be in action too – he takes on Lukas Lacko of Slovenia. Marin Cilic plays Guido Pella on Court One, with Andreas Seppi up against Kevin Anderson on Court Two.

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams once again dropped the opening set, and once again dominated the rest of the way to win. 

The No 9 seed, at 38 the oldest woman in the draw, came back to beat 141st-ranked qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 to reach the third round at the All England Club. 

Williams got broken in the first game and did not recover in the opening set, in which she made 12 unforced errors, twice as many as Dulgheru. Nine of those were errant forehands. 

But the American, the runner-up at Wimbledon a year ago, then won seven games in a row. 

In the first round, Williams started by ceding a tiebreaker against 58th-ranked Johanna Larsson before taking 12 of the last 15 games.

Madison Keys revealed after her win that she's now supporting England at the World Cup. The more on the bandwagon the merrier, I say.

"I watched England play last night," she said. "I was actually watching with Laura. She was singing the 'it's coming home' song consistently for, like, two-and-a-half hours.

"Where I am in the Village I can hear the Rose & Crown. My TV was ahead of theirs, so something would happen and Laura would scream, and then, like, five seconds later the whole pub would scream. I was actually into it at the very end. So now I'm cheering for England."

Federer's backhand really is a thing of beauty. He injects so much whip and power into it, without seemingly trying at all. Positioned on the left of the court, he fizzes the ball across the face of his opponent with an arcing sweep to send Lacko scrambling to make the return. Alas, it's in vain. The Swiss keeps his foot on the jugular and pushes on to force the break.

Second seed Caroline Wozniacki has taken to action on Court One against Ekaterina Makarova.

After breaking her Glad Slam duck earlier this year, the Dane will be looking to claim a maiden title here at SW19. She's not exactly made the best of starts in this second-round match, though. The Australian Open champion is currently two games down against the Russian.

Federer has taken the second set - that didn't take long at all. To his credit, Lacko hasn't proven to be a complete walkover - though I sense this final set is where the gulf in quality between the two men will be properly exposed.

Indeed, the Slovakian has been immediately broken in this third set, throwing away his serve with an unforced error that looped far behind the white line.

Wow. That was scarily easy for the Swiss. He put in a typically flawless display to brush aside the Slovakian who was unable to put up any form of fight, going down in straight sets. Federer is through to the third round and looking as brilliant as ever. Given his form so far, it's hard to see at the moment who will deny him a ninth Wimbledon title.
