Wimbledon 2019: The best outdoor big screens in the UK to watch the tennis

Make the most of the weather and watch the tournament on a big screen

Wimbledon fortnight is almost upon us, which means it's time to limber up, pour a glass of Pimm's, feast on strawberrys and cream, and enjoy plenty of worldclass tennis.

This year, the London-based event will run from Monday 1 July to Sunday 14 July and with it comes the perfect opportunity to embrace the great British summer weather.

If you missed out on the ballot for tickets this time round, fear not, because you don't have to be relegated to the sofa and glued to a small TV screen.

Luckily, giant outdoor screens are popping up across the UK, meaning you can watch Wimbledon 2019 while simultaneously basking in the sun.

Here’s our round-up of the best places to watch Wimbledon outside this summer:

Granary Square, London

For 2019, King's Cross is hosting screenings on the canal-side steps in Granary Square with BBC coverage being shown until 8pm each evening.

As for food and drink, visitors can expert to find an array of bars and restaurants including KERB street food market and a pop-up Summer Love bar.

The screenings are part of the Everyman Summer Love Film Festival, so you can stick around post-match for a movie, if you so wish.

First Street, Manchester

First Street has become the top spot to watch Wimbledon matches in recent years and 2019 is no exception.

For the fourth year running, the First Street estate has announced that it will screening the tournament right through to the finals on 14 July.

There will also be giant Jenga, table tennis and other fun games to keep the whole family entertained.

Skylight, London

A bar themed around a British lawn club, this year Skylight will be celebrating Wimbledon with the addition of screens, both indoors and outdoors.

New to the venue for 2019, guests can book day beds and garden booths in advance. Otherwise, entry is free, and there are plenty of food and drink options on offer.

If you fancy a break between matches, head to the rooftop where you can play a game of pétanque or croquet.

Princesshay Square, Exeter

Returning for its second year, the outdoor screen at Princesshay Square will be open for the duration of the two-week tournament.

The venue will provide deckchairs, beanbags and a temporary lawn for visiting tennis fans watching the matches, free of charge.

There will also be an array of eateries open, including takeaway options so you won’t miss a moment of the action.

Cardinal Place, London

Back by popular demand, this year you can watch all the action from the centre court on a roof garden at Cardinal Place shopping centre.

With a canary canopy and plenty of tutti-frutti-inspired seating, it makes for the perfect pitstop with your colleagues for a lunchtime treat.

To make sure you don’t go thirsty between matches there will also be a roof garden bar where tonic brand Franklin & Sons has partnered with Portobello Road Gin to give you sparkling drinks made with rosemary, pink grapefruit and rhubarb flavoured tonic.

Screen on the Green, Newcastle

Screen on the Green takes over this square in Newcastle city centre every summer to show classic family films.

Running alongside the open air movies this year, however, will be a Summer of Sport starting with Wimbledon tennis on 1 July.

For 2019, the location is also working with Intu Eldon Square and its Family Club, meaning you can expect to find everything from pop-up experiences and sampling, to family-friendly activities throughout the summer.

Hyde Park, London

British Summer Time festival in Hyde Park is a great spot to catch your favourite music artists, but it's also one of the best places to watch Wimbledon on the big screen.

From 8-11 July, the venue will be screening the Wimbledon Championship from 12pm every day and entry is free.

Sadly, there won't be any screening of the final here due to pre-arranged performances from Florence + The Machine and Robbie Williams.

Millennium Square, Leeds

The large square in the centre of Leeds will once again host a big screen where guests can soak up all the live action.

This year, the area is to be transformed to resemble London's famous "Murray Mound" complete with artificial grass, picnic benches and deck chairs.

Neverland at Fulham Beach Club, London

If you’re saving yourself for the finals then there really is no better place to head than Fulham Beach Club.

In honour of the women's finals on 13 July, the venue is hosting a white party from 12pm to 11pm where guests can watch the tournament and enjoy a free drink on arrival.

Entry is free to those who wear white, while table packages that include 50 per cent off your first bottle and mixers are also. available.

Millennium Square, Bristol

Wimbledon is returning to Bristol's We The Curious Big Screen this year with a live BBC feed of the prestigious tennis tournament.

Fans can watch the matches from the comfort of deckchairs while enjoying a refreshment or two from the pop up bar and the At-Bristol Cafe.

As the deckchair seating is provided on a first come first served basis, guests are welcome to bring their own blankets, chairs and even picnics.
