Second-row Cory Hill forced his way over in the 68th minute after a lengthy period of Welsh resurgence to seize the lead for the first time, his team thriving amid the arrival of replacement fly-half Dan Biggar from the bench to direct the final quarter.
And bedlam ensued at the Principality Stadium in the closing moments when Josh Adams grabbed Biggar's crossfield kicked to touch down and confirm a famous win.
Gatland's first taste of success over opposite number Eddie Jones in four attempts also set a new national record of 12 consecutive victories and was a fitting way to end their Championship rivalry before the Kiwi steps down after the World Cup.

28 mins: Oh Wales, what have you done They secure the lineout and Owens gets round to collect the ball in the maul, but while he's not looking Gareth Davies accidentally punches the ball out of Owen's hand and England attack. Daly comes wide, and after Curry and Lawes go tight, a big tackle knocks the latter sideways. However, Tipuric switches off and Tom Curry spots it, collecting the ball from the base and running straight through to score his first test try. Farrell converts and England are back in the lead. 3-10
30 mins: England's forwards are starting to gain the ascendancy as Curry turns the ball over in contact, and when Farrell boots up field it;s Vunipola and Wilson leading the charge. They retrieve the ball back from a clearance kcik, but then Tipuric does well to keep the ball up and the decision goes Wales' way.
33 mins: It;s getting hectic out there! Navidi does brilliantly to offload in the tackle to Anscombe, but his kick attempt is charged down by Slade and he breaks. Williams catches him and he pops up to May, but Adams has done well to track his opposite man and tackles the wing before he's away. Farrell then chips deep but Williams gets back again and when England infringe at the ruck by coming in at the side, Wales get the penalty on their own line.
36 mins: Wales get a penalty when Vunipola comes around the side thinking the ball is out...it isn't. But the chance goes when the lineout falters again, as Tipuric's pass down to Davies is knocked on by the scrum-half.
38 mins: The ball isn't hooked by George...and Wales decimate the scrum when George pops up! It's turned over and Davies kicks, and Youngs just gets the ball back into the field of play to keep it live. Nowell then does brilliantly to make four or five metres, allowing Youngs to kick clear, and when May races up the field for the chase he clatters into Anscombe just as he catches it.
40 mins: Wales try to break down the left, but it falls for Kruis to collect as Tipuric's offload comes loose. He fins Daly, and the full-back whips it across the line to George, Farrell and then May. He boots the ball up-field and races after it, and when Parkes collects it May's there to drive him into touch. He roars in delight in front of the crowd.
40 mins: The game stops with 10 seconds on the clock, and England have the linout about 10m out from the line. Can they take points with them into the half...
40 mins: England go with the driving maul. All the forwards are in, then the centres...May joins too. But Youngs throws a poor pass back for Farrell and he has little support, so he puts a high bomb up for Nowell. Nowell touches it back and Daly tries to get it, but Wales gather possession and clear to end the half.
Wales 3-10 England
H/T: What an absorbing, draining half of Six Nations rugby. England are good value for their lead, with Wales proving wasteful with their chances and the lineout in particular has faltered. Curry has certainly been the standout player so far, not just for his awareness for the try but the fact he has made an eye-watering 17 tackles in one half of rugby. That number wouldn't look out of place at the end of the match, let alone now.
