Second-row Cory Hill forced his way over in the 68th minute after a lengthy period of Welsh resurgence to seize the lead for the first time, his team thriving amid the arrival of replacement fly-half Dan Biggar from the bench to direct the final quarter.
And bedlam ensued at the Principality Stadium in the closing moments when Josh Adams grabbed Biggar's crossfield kicked to touch down and confirm a famous win.
Gatland's first taste of success over opposite number Eddie Jones in four attempts also set a new national record of 12 consecutive victories and was a fitting way to end their Championship rivalry before the Kiwi steps down after the World Cup.

13 mins: Nowell makes a nice catch off a Davies box-kick and when Vunipola plays the pivot, it allows Daly to charge into midfield. Youngs spots a gap and kicks over, and Williams can only track the ball into touch in the Welsh 22. From the lineout, Owens' throw is crokked and England sniff blood, and Youngs taps and goes!
14 mins: It was actually a dummy-throw from Owens and he looks a bag of nerves at the lineout so far. However, England waste the chance as Farrell throws a forward pass to Slade, and Poite picks it up immediately.
16 mins: The scrum takes a while to get going as Poite resets, and when it goes to ground his arm is in England's favour as he penalises Evans and Sinckler gets the plaudits. Farrell will go for goal...
18 mins: Farrell's kick is straight through the posts and England lead! 0-3
21 mins: Curry does well to get across and just stop North breaking through, but when hes called upon again to tackle Liam Williams, he's trapped on the wrong side of the ball and Wales have the penalty. Again, Anscombe goes to touch and it's about 10m out.
23 mins: Wales go through the phases after securing the lineout through Hill, and as they move from left to right through Parkes, Navidi and Owens, Sinckler goes in and is penalised. With the advantage, Anscombe kicks across field...but Parkes catches it in touch and we'll come back for the penalty.
24 mins: Anscombe kicks the simple penalty and we're back to all-square! 3-3
25 mins: Farrell spots Williams out of position at full-back and clips over a hig chip, which Williams watches into touch as the retreating Welsh reserves quickly move out of the way. Wales have the lineout just outside their 22...turnover!
