From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.England begin their summer tour against South Africa on Saturday in the first Test at Ellis Park, a stadium where the red rose has not emerged triumphant in 46 years.
Eddie Jones sends his side into the match looking to end their four-game losing streak, having suffered three straight losses in the Six Nations and losing to the Barbarians a fortnight ago. They are also without their captain, Dylan Hartley, due to concussion as Owen Farrell takes over the leadership duties. Mike Brown starts on the wing with Elliot Daly at full-back, while New Zealand-born flanker Brad Shields is among the replacements and could make his international debut.
South Africa meanwhile will make history as Stormers flanker Siya Kolisi becomes the first black player to captain the Springboks, and does so wearing the No 6 shirt that became so famous when Nelson Mandela wore it during the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

21 mins: That's the reply South Africa needed. A good pass from Le Roux out to Nkosi sees the wing bash over Ford, and from the ruck Itoje jumps the gun, goes early and Faf de Klerk sneaks over around the fringe. Pollard misses the conversion though. 8-24
26 mins: Bizarrely there hasn't been a try for five minutes, such has been the rate of scoring in this game so far. England are just beginning to wobble slightly, as May comes running like a headless chicken in-field with no progress and Daly fires a kick straight into touch to give the Springboks good territory in the England half. It comes to no avail though as the ball is knocked on.
29 mins: The Springboks are definitely in this contest now, and as Nkosi goes close again only for a Daly tackle to stop him, Mako Vunipola gets a crucial turnover five metres out, but they have the ball back...TRY FOR SOUTH AFRICA!
29 mins: Following the turnover, Youngs kicked possession away but missed touch and South Africa countered. They flooded down the blindside, with De Allende passing to S’busiso Nkosi, and his chip looked for all money to be fielded by a covering Daly - only for the full-back to miss the ball! Nkosi pounces on the loose ball to score the try and Pollard adds an excellent conversion. 15-24
34 mins: What a game this is! South Africa attack from right to left, and as the wing Dyantyi collects the ball right on the touchline, he offloads inside to S’busiso Nkosi to grab his second of the game! Pollard adds the conversion and the lead is cut to just two points! 22-24
37 mins: England are beginning to gall foul of the referee now, with Robshaw penalised and when De Klerk goes quickly Itoje allows him the 10m before tackling him around the head. He steals the ball in the process, but that's another penalty for a high shot and South Africa kick to the corner.
