Winger Emiliano Boffelli scored 25 points as Argentina shocked a misfiring England 30-29 to claim their first win at Twickenham since 2006 and end a 10-game losing streak against the team they face in their opening game at the World Cup.

Boffelli scored a superb try and kicked six penalties as the Pumas went toe to toe with the favourites on a horrible wet day to give them a huge boost ahead of next September’s Marseille clash.

England led 16-12 at half-time, with Joe Cokanasiga’s barrelling try a rare attacking highlight and Boffelli landing four penalties to keep Argentina in touch.

The Pumas surged clear as Boffelli finished off a slick backline move and Santiago Carreras added a second try with a 50-metre breakaway, only for England’s replacement scrum half Jack van Poortvliet to score a minute after coming on. Argentina led by a point and it stayed that way after two more penalties apiece as England never threatened to turn it round and their November programme got off to a disappointing start.

Jonny Bairstow ‘enthralled’ England squad ahead of Argentina clash at Twickenham

England intend hitting Argentina for six after cricket World Cup winner Jonny Bairstow visited their camp to deliver a motivational talk for Sunday’s autumn opener at Twickenham.

Eddie Jones’ squad were captivated as Bairstow told how he dealt with the highs and lows of his career, most recently the difficulty in coming to terms with the broken leg sustained during a freak golfing accident that has forced him to miss the T20 World Cup currently being staged in Australia.

England face the Pumas in the opening match of the Autumn Nations Series and Bairstow, who played for Yorkshire in age grade rugby, offered an insight into how he copes with pressure as they continue the countdown to their own global showpiece.

“Jonny was fantastic. He’s a big rugby fan, a number 10. He had the boys enthralled for an hour,” Jones said.

“He’s a great guy, loves his sport. He’s a dedicated sportsman and he loved watching training. Wants to bat at five he tells me.”

Ellis Genge warns former team-mates ‘gloves are off’ ahead of Argentina clash

England prop Ellis Genge has warned Argentina “the gloves are off” when he places his admiration for the Pumas on ice for Sunday’s collision at Twickenham.

Genge played alongside Tomas Lavanini, Julian Montoya and Matias Moroni when at Leicester, describing the trio who start for the tourists as “heroes” because of their no nonsense approach to the game.

But for 80 minutes the hard-running Bristol prop is ready to transform from friend to enemy when the Autumn Nations Series launches with a dress rehearsal for the rivals’ pool opener at next year’s World Cup.

“They’re heroes, honestly. Bar some of the English boys they’re probably some of the best I’ve got on with people,” Genge said. “I just think they’re so honest and so true, straight up and down, no ambiguity about where you stand.

“(Argentina captain) Julian Montoya has been one of the best players in the world this year and he’s leading his country out at Twickenham against current and former team-mates.”

Owen Farrell determined to lead England on his terms after reclaiming captaincy

Owen Farrell will continue to lead England his own way after being restored as captain for the autumn opener against Argentina at Twickenham on Sunday.

Farrell will take charge at inside centre having recovered from the concussion that threatened his involvement in the dress rehearsal for a pivotal group clash at next year’s World Cup.

With doubts growing over Courtney Lawes’ involvement in the Autumn Nations Series as he battles with his own head injury, Eddie Jones has ignored the leadership claims of Ellis Genge, Jack Nowell and Tom Curry and instead reverted to the talisman of his reign.

It comes in spite of England’s head coach revealing when naming his squad for the campaign last month that he had replaced Farrell with Lawes partly because of the Northampton forward’s greater composure when communicating with referees.

Handling officials is a crucial part of the job and Farrell has thought deeply about an approach that has appeared confrontational at times, but any changes will not be made at the cost of his own personality.

Eddie Jones urged to settle on strongest XV to find England ‘connection’ before World Cup

Mike Tindall believes England are in urgent need of nailing down their strongest starting XV in order to be at their best at next year’s Rugby World Cup.

The former centre, 44, earned 75 England caps and starred in the 2003 side that went on to win the Rugby World Cup in Australia.

England face a daunting Autumn Nations Series schedule, with matches against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa at Twickenham under 12 months out from the World Cup in France.

And according to Tindall, the key to England’s chances of success all lies in the team’s cohesion.

Tindall, speaking ahead of Sunday’s opening clash against the Pumas at Twickenham, said: “One thing Eddie (Jones) wants to do is see people play, my only thing is he needs to start sticking to people now, a year out from the World Cup.”

This week he has split his time between the two camps and, following Lebanon’s quarter-final defeat by Australia on Friday night, he darted down to London to finalise preparations for Twickenham.

He insists the transition will be seamless, but only Sunday’s outcome will decide if he bit off more than he can chew.
