Naomi Osaka lights Olympic cauldron as Tokyo 2020 Games begin

Playing with 10 men for most of the game, Brazil held the Ivory Coast to a 0-0 draw on Sunday in the group stage of the men’s Olympic football tournament.

Brazil are the defending Olympic champions after winning on home soil at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, but they were at a disadvantage early when Douglas Luiz, who plays for Aston Villa, was sent off in the 13th minute.

Ivory Coast midfielder Eboue Kouassi was sent off in the 79th. Both Luiz and Kouassi won’t be able to play in their teams’ final group matches.

The Brazilians won their Group D opener over Germany 4-2. Richarlison scored a hat trick.

Ivory Coast midfielder Franck Kessie scored the winner in his team’s opening 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia.

Brazil captain Dani Alves, at 38, is the oldest player in the tournament, which features under-23 teams on the men’s side with coaches allowed to bring three older players.

Biles makes uncharacteristic errors

The USA came second to ROC in the gymnastics qualification earlier this morning and star Simone Biles made some mistakes.

She made some uncharacteristic errors on the vault and the floor in the first two rotations and her teammates also failed to impress as the US didn’t finish first for the first time in a World Championships or Olympics since 2010.

In the all-round standings Biles does lead despite her mistakes with a score of 57.731. She is closely followed by USA’s Suni Lee who has 57.166 and then ROC’s Angelina Melnikova on 57.132.

With two round of athletes still to go Biles is in a qualifying place for all five finals. We will keep you posted on if that changes throughout the morning.

Brazil make fast start against Ivory Coast

Brazil have immediately taken the upper hand in the early stages in Yokohama, with Richarlison darting down the left wing and sending panic through Ivory Coast’s defence. It has not been entirely one-way traffic, though, with AC Milan’s central midfielder, Franck Kessié, able to settle the tempo a little.

Brazil face Ivory Coast

Brazil started their Tokyo Olympics campaign in spectacular fashion with a 4-2 thashing of Germany in their first group match and victory against the Ivory Coast will all but guarantee their place in the knockout stages.

While there can be no doubting the quality on show for the reigning champions, who won on home soil in Rio five years ago, Ivory Coast will still provide firm opposition, with Manchester United pair Eric Bailly and Amad Diallo both featuring.
