The New England Patriots outlasted the Los Angeles Rams in the lowest-scoring game in Super Bowl history.

Sony Michel's fourth-quarter touchdown proved the defining play of a game that was dominated by defences. The win, a sixth, sees the Pats equal the Pittsburgh Steelers for the most titles ever and gives quarterback Tom Brady the most-ever Super Bowls for a player.

Here's how it all played out in Atlanta:

Chung walks off but is straight down the touchline, it's his arm, currently being held in a sling.

Gurley stuffed and denied a gain, third and five coming...

Gilmore up high to batt away the pass intended for Cooks. Wow. Some stop from the Pats, this game is all about the D.

Punt.

Brady now back behind centre.

Michel begins the run with four on the ground. But that's followed up by Burkhead being stopped for a marginal gain.

Third down: EDELMAN!

He's done it again, down the middle for the connection and he staggers for a huge first down.

Chung is out!

Meanwhile the Pats soldier on, Edelman with another catch, a quick toss out to the left and he dives for a quick gain.

Another intended for Edelman is tapped away by Peters, finally.

His game will briefly pause on eight catches for 120 yards, Pats punt.

Rams become the first team to punt on SEVEN successive possessions to open the Super Bowl. Wow. Offensive explosion? Hmmm.

Can they get one going here?

They're behind the sticks quickly, facing third down.

Six yards needed... Gurley in, Goff tosses it away just before he is taken down by Hightower. The Rams appear devoid of ideas on how to move the ball. Is it over? Do the Pats even need another point? Eighth punt is sailed to the 45, then rolls to the 30, a huge punt!

Something to celebrate for the Rams? That's a record.

Burkhead struggles for four up the middle to get this drive going.

You wonder if a Pats score here might trigger the Rams somewhat? The urgency to move it quicker if down by a couple of scores? Higher risk, sure, but Plan A has been abysmal.

Now the Pats suffer a penalty and go to second down and 13.

Can one of the Rams' star defensive players make a play? Suh? Donald? Just like the Eagles last year.

Edelman, once again, for his ninth catch of the game. A huge lob from Brady towards Hogan, but Peters keeps his eyes fixed and fists it up and away to safety.

Punt.

Goff, 5/15, 52 yards, sacked twice.

Now or never?

Jack Rathborn4 February 2019 01:57

Anderson, head first, dives for a first down. Relief.

Goff fires a bullet to the touchline, Cooks comes back and gathers it. Tidy.

Anderson bouncing through the sea of bodies for three. Then the heat comes, Goff forced to chuck it away.

Third down? A momentum saver here if they can convert. Gurley on the sideline. 0/8 on third...

GOT IT! Woods wraps his arms around it and it's a big first down. It was fired in.

Los Angeles 3-3 New England (FG: Greg Zuerlein)

After the timeout, Goff goes for it!

McCourty is there though, to take it away from Cooks. Goff should connect.

What an opportunity.

Gurley then takes a slant and is hurried out of bounds.

Third down, can they save the momentum? NO! Hightower gobbles up Goff and takes him way out of comfortable range.

Zuerlein from 53: GOT IT! Stunner from 'The Leg'

We have a game, will Brady respond?

Edelman struts his way back into the game. At 32 years of age, he's showing a super human effort to help Brady move the ball, can he continue the run?

End of the third quarter: Los Angeles 3-3 New England

James White ripped down to the turf, but that's a hold. First down.

Michel rumbles through a couple of tackles for a big gain, but then he's stacked up to end the third quarter. Nine carries for 50 yards.
