From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The 148th Open Championship returns to Northern Ireland for only the second time in the tournament’s grand history, 68 years after first visiting Portrush in 1951, and features a heavily-packed Irish contingent of Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and plenty others.
But a number of Americans arrive at the final major of the year heading the pecking order, with Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods both hotly fancied after their recent form – the former unstoppable in majors over the last two years and latter claiming his 15th major at the Masters.
But there are plenty of other names in the mix from closer to home, with former world No 1 Justin Rose and in-form Englishman Matt Wallace among those to watch, while Jon Rahm is expected to challenge for his first major victory.

Leaderboard Update
The opening group is through the first five holes so here is the first leaderboard update of the 148th Open Championship:
Clarke (-3) thru 5
Sugrue (a) (-1) thru 5
Hoffman (-1) thru 5
Grillo (-1) thru 4
Lombard (-1) thru 2
On the tee
Branden Grace, Shane Lowry and Phil Mickelson are up next on the first tee. The rain is still coming down but only lightly.
Mickelson finds the left side of the fairway with Lowry down the middle. Grace follows him.
6th hole
The opening group is certainly having the best of it out there. James Sugrue (a) (-2) moves to within one of the lead with a birdie on the sixth.
2nd hole
His fellow amateur Matthias Schmis (a) (evs) cancels out his opening bogey with a birdie four on the second.
3rd hole
Back-to-back birdies for Frenchman Romain Langasque sees him drop to 2-under for the first three holes.
1st hole
Mickelson, Lowry and Grace all par the opening hole.
On the range
Ian Poulter has been spotted on the range, preparing for his round. He's set to tee off in just over an hour at 9.03am
7th hole
Darren Clarke (-3) is in trouble on the seventh. He's sent his second into the long grass and needs a drop to continue. His fourth shot lands just short of the green and an up and down bogey would be the best Darren can hope for here.
3rd hole
Harrington (-1) lands a birdie 2 on the third to move into the red.
2nd hole
An approach shot from Mickelson (evs) leaves the ball off the front edge of the green, he'll have a chip and run for eagle.
7th hole
Clarke (-3) limits the damage with a long putt over the green that finishes inches from the hole but he'll drop to back to 2-under.
On the tee
The tenth group tees off on the first. Webb Simpson, CT Pan and Sergio Garcia head down the fairway.
1st hole
Alex Noren (-1) becomes only the second player to birdie the first hole today after Darren Clarke (-2).
2nd hole
Eddie Pepperell's four on the second moves him into the red as he joins the group of five players on 1-under.
