Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Follow the latest scores from The Open live as the first day at Royal Portrush gets underway.

The 148th Open Championship returns to Northern Ireland for only the second time in the tournament’s grand history, 68 years after first visiting Portrush in 1951, and features a heavily-packed Irish contingent of Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke, Graeme McDowell and plenty others.

But a number of Americans arrive at the final major of the year heading the pecking order, with Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods both hotly fancied after their recent form – the former unstoppable in majors over the last two years and latter claiming his 15th major at the Masters.

But there are plenty of other names in the mix from closer to home, with former world No 1 Justin Rose and in-form Englishman Matt Wallace among those to watch, while Jon Rahm is expected to challenge for his first major victory.

Latest updates

Please allow a moment for the leaderboard to load.

Justin Rose (-2) finishes with a par on the 18th. Three birdies and a bogey in a 2-under round of 69. It's been an up and down day for Justin, full of imaginative shots and a few mistakes but he goes into the clubhouse, just three back.

Tony Finau (-3) completes his round as well. No shots dropped in a round of 68 and three birdies made. It's been a good effort from the American and he's set well for tomorrow.

John Rahm (-4) comes into trouble on the 15th but settles for a bogey 5. He drops a shot and falls one back. On the 16th Rahm misses a putt for birdie but manages to hold onto par.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 19:48

The wheels were just threatening to come off for Rahm (-4) as he found the bunker with his second shot, his third was a cracker though, chipped onto the green and left about two feet from the hole.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 19:58

Jason Day finishes his round in the red at 1-under par. An eight par streak was broken on the last hole with a bogey five.

His playing partner Dustin Johnson (+1) suffered a similar fate but finished the wring side of the par line.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 20:01

Day One of the 148th Open Championship is winding down, seven groups remain on the course but it's unlikely anyone will catch JB Holmes.

Not impossible but unlikely.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 20:04

It's over for Tiger Woods (+7) he's been far from his best today and his round can be summed up with the final par putt. Another miss that led to a drop shot.

Matt Wallace (+2)  dug in deep and took back control of a round that could have gotten away from him. He goes in with a 73 and a chance to make the cut tomorrow.

Michael Jones18 July 2019 20:10

John Rahm finishes his round. He drops two shots in the last four holes and drops back into the chasing pack at (-3). A bogey on the last inflames his Spanish passion and he's disappointed with the way that he finished.

A round of 68 with six birdies and three bogeys sets Rahm up for the chase on Friday.

Leaderboard Update:

Holmes -5 (66)

Lowry -4 (67)

Rahm -3 (68)

Garcia -3 (68)

Koepka -3 (68)

Westwood -3 (68)

Fleetwood -3 (68)

Five more players sit on -3 including Inamori and Turner who are still out on the course

Michael Jones18 July 2019 20:25

Ashton Turner (-3) heads into the last four holes, statistically four of the top five hardest holes on the course today.

He's the only player left on the course with a chance to reach leader JB Holmes at (-5). As he's off first tomorrow we'll bring you an update on how his finals holes went.

For now though, I'm signing off but I'll be back at 6:30am with all the action from Day Two of the 148th Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

See you then!
