Woods brought the roars back to the famed venue with a brilliant four-under-par 68, putting himself on track for a fifth Green Jacket.
At six-under-par 138, the American is just one shot off the leaders heading into 'moving day'.
After an ordinary outward nine featuring three birdies offset by a pair of bogeys, Woods embarked on one of his trademark charges, carding three birdies after the turn to shoot up the leaderboard.

John Rahm has a blistering start to his round with back-to-back birdies at 2 and 3. He moves into the chasing pack at -5.
Tiger Woods has a more sedate start with three pars.
A left-to-right putt on the 18th swings too much to deny Poulter another birdie so he settles for par.
A round of 71 leaves him at -5 and the leader in the clubhouse. A title he won't hold long as a certain Italian gentleman is following him down the 18th.
Dustin Johnson and Jason Day both birdie 15 to move to 6-under par. It's been a test of patience for DJ and he's stood up to it well.
Speith plays his second shot on 14 to within a couple of inches and has a tap-in birdie. He was +4 at the start of the day and has now moved to -1.
Bryson DeChambeau gets a much needed birdie at 15 to move to -4. Oosthuizen birdies the 6th to move -4 as well.
Tiger makes an error on the fifth after a poor tee shot put him in danger. He makes bogey and drops back to -2.
Molinari pars the last for a round of 67.
Francesco Molinari posts a bogey free round of 67 to lead in the clubhouse on -7. Jason Day birdies the 15th to join him at 7-under.
