Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Follow live updates from the Rugby World Cup as New Zealand return to action this morning to take on Canada.

The All Blacks put in a composed and measured performance to beat fierce rivals South Africa in their opening match, cementing their status as favourites to lift the Webb Ellis Cup next month.

Steve Hansen has made 11 changes for today's Pool B fixture at the Oita Stadium, with New Zealand expected to romp to victory against a Canadian side that was beaten 48-7 by Italy. Follow the live action below:

2 minutes

A clean break through the middle after Jordie Barrett makes ground on the right touchline, with Matt Todd running a hard line against the grain and feeding a supporting TJ Perenara, so good on that cheat line.

Kieran Read picks and goes, but the captain is held up. Five-metre scrum for New Zealand.

4 minutes

New Zealand appear to drive early and the scrum goes down, but Romain Poite says it is only a reset, not a free-kick.

Now a free kick TO New Zealand - early engage from Canada. Best part of three minutes we've been waiting for this scrum now...

TRY! Penalty try!

A great drive from New Zealand, and Romain Poite pings them for standing up as Kieran Read controls at the back. Penalty try, seven points.

New Zealand 7-0 Canada

7 minutes

New Zealand make another break with TJ Perenara again involved in support, but when they work the ball infield Lucas Rumball is sharp to retrieve a loose bit of rucking and nick the ball.

Canada attack, with DTH van der Merwe one-on-one with Shannon Frizell on the wing, but the large blindside flanker manages to corral his man and allows Kieran Read to get over the ball, winning a penalty, which Richie Mo'unga puts into the corner.

Harry Latham-Coyle2 October 2019 11:25

TRY! That's two!

New Zealand carry well, getting over the gainline to suck in the Canada defence, and Richie Mo'unga calls for the ball.

And why not? Jordie Barrett has about 20 yards of space on the right wing, Mo'unga hoists out towards him and it is an unopposed catch and score for the youngest brother.

Mo'unga adds the two.

New Zealand 14-0 Canada

11 minutes

Jack Goodhue sees the ball slip through his hands on the left, but Canada concede a penalty as he dives to recover his error.

13 minutes

Better from Canada, winning the ball back and putting up a good high kick, with Gordon McRorie's box well-weighted, and Beauden Barrett knocks on in the air.

Peter Nelson again looks to use the boot, but fires right into the arms of Richie Mo'unga in the backfield.

Harry Latham-Coyle2 October 2019 11:30

14 minutes

Mo'unga kicks the mark long into touch, and the lineout falls into Shannon Frizell's hands, who sets off on a long-legged charge, putting a dent in a Canadian player as he takes contact.

Whipped to the right and it is B.Barrett to J.Barrett, with Beauden perhaps giving the pass slightly to early and thus seeing his brother bundled over the touchline before he can release the one-handed offload back to him. Canada take the lineout down and clear.

Harry Latham-Coyle2 October 2019 11:32

TRY? TJ Perenara dives for the corner but has he got it down?

Harry Latham-Coyle2 October 2019 11:33

Brilliant attacking play from New Zealand, with Sonny Bill Williams getting his arms through contact to tee up Jordie Barrett on an arcing charge, and Shannon Frizell's great strides bound him onwards.

Rieko Ioane is stopped just shy of the line but Perenara dives from the base, and might just have squeezed this in the corner.
