This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.
The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Day three at Royal Ascot hosts the feature race of the week, the Gold Cup, the event's oldest surviving race.
History was made in 2013 when Estimate won the Gold Cup, making The Queen the first reigning monarch to own a winner in the race’s 212-year history.
Stradivarius is favourite to retain his title for jockey Frankie Dettori and trainer John Gosden, although it faces a much stronger field than the one it enjoyed 12 months ago. Follow live updates in the blog below:

5:00 Britannia Stakes
Awe impressed at Newmarket and always looks a runner with a lot of ability. He’s strong in stature and has form on soft and good to firm ground. Three runs in a month may be the only thing going against it.
