Six Nations: Ireland in profile

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ireland take on Scotland at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon as the duo kick off their Six Nations campaign.

Wales have set the early running with fast start against Italy in Cardiff at lunchtime and both of these sides will want to join them in beginning with a win. Follow it live after the conclusion of Wales vs Italy:

Italy still having the better of things, and another penalty allows Allan to launch the ball down into the Welsh 22. A long throw to Braam Steyn is well claimed, and Italy begin to bring their powerful forwards into the game around the fringes.

Wales drive replacement Lazzaroni back in a double tackle, but fail to roll away and are whistled by Luke Pearce. Italy take the scrum beneath the posts.

Italy fail to get a nudge on at scrum-time, and are told to play away as it goes down. But their backs are stopped rather easily, and when Dillon Lewis chops down Danilo Fischetti at the knees, Alun Wyn Jones is quick to pounce. He's in a strong position over the top of the ball and only able to be shifted by an illegal clearout. In from the side the call from referee Pearce; Wales pump the penalty up to somewhere near the halfway line.

A couple of changes for Wales. Ross Moriarty is on for Taulupe Faletau, who had a thoroughly professional return, and Nick Tompkins is back with us on a more permanent basis - Hadleigh Parkes has been removed on this occasion, with Tompkins straight into the line at inside centre, with George North set to go the 80 in the 13 shirt.

Italy have been good at the scrum today. Dillon Lewis has endured a slightly tough afternoon on the tighthead side for the Welsh, and Danilo Fischetti this time gets underneath him and forces him to concede the penalty.

Italy kick back into the Welsh 22.

Italy try to maul, again, but that hasn't worked all afternoon. They make nary a metre, and when it collapses it will be a Wales scrum. The backs again came in to lend their weight, but by then it had already been stymied.

Harry Latham-Coyle1 February 2020 15:36

A number of changes for both sides. Wales bring on Cory Hill and Rob Evans in the row and on the loosehead, while Italy introduce Jayden Hayward and Giovanni Licata in the back three and back row. Hayward will go to full-back and Matteo Minozzi will slide out to the left wing.

Falcon! A loose pass from Luca Bigi bounces into the path of Tomos Williams, who absolutely hammers it straight into the face of the Italian at most a metre from the scrum-half's right boot. That will have hurt.

Giovanni Licata shows impressive hands to gather and then release a lovely offload, but Italy cannot make anything of it.

Harry Latham-Coyle1 February 2020 15:39

TRY! Nick Tompkins has a try on debut!

Italy lose the ball in midfield and their is a broken line for Wales to attack. A half-break from Rob Evans gets them going, and his offload to Jake Ball allows the big lock to thunder away. He is dragged down on the 22-metre line, but Dan Biggar has the presence of mind to quickly shift the ball from the base of the ruck, a dive pass to Nick Tompkins with only space ahead of him, and the centre charges through it, putting a step on the retreating Matteo Minozzi to hold off his challenge and dot down.

A quick check with the TMO, but all is well, and Dan Biggar slots the simplest of conversions.

Wales 28-0 Italy
