Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Ireland take on Scotland at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon as the duo kick off their Six Nations campaign.

Gregor Townsend knows his Scottish side will have to pull out all the stops to defeat and Ireland outift who have won 15 of their past 16 Tests at home and are beginning a new era under head coach Andy Farrell.

Wales have set the early running with fast start against Italy in Cardiff at lunchtime and both of these sides will want to join them in beginning with a win. Follow it live after the conclusion of Wales vs Italy:

HALF TIME: Wales 21-0 Italy

Harry Latham-Coyle1 February 2020 15:04

A strong start to the Wayne Pivac era for Wales, who have been rather allowed to find their fluency by a disappointing Italian performance. Three Dan Biggar penalties pushed Wales into the lead initially, and Josh Adams' double puts the Welsh in a convincing lead at the interval.

Along with Adams and the excellent Biggar, I thought Leigh Halfpenny and Tomos Williams both had excellent halves. Both have been involved in plenty. The pack have fronted up well to the physical Italian forwards most of the time, too.

Italy have been disappointing. They have kicked horrifically and their breakdown work has been inaccurate. There have been glimpses of promising attacking play with their dual distributor system at 10 and 12, but they've really failed to get their back row into the game. A shame. Franco Smith will surely be having some stern words in the changing room.

A bit of breaking news from Paris ahead of England vs France tomorrow - rangy wing Damian Penaud has reportedly been ruled out for the hosts; Vincent Rattez is set to start in his place. A big blow for Fabien Galthie's young guns.

Harry Latham-Coyle1 February 2020 15:12

The players are just starting to make their way back out onto the pitch at the Principality Stadium. Wayne Pivac has retaken his place in the coaching box, wearing a rather broad smile. He's enjoyed what he has seen so far.

Wales would equal their Six Nations record with an eight consecutive competition win today - it's looking good.

The Italians follow the hosts out, and will kick things off in the second 40...

Resumption in Cardiff.

A good carry from Niccolo Cannone, who has made metres every time he has got the ball this afternoon, as Italy open the half in possession. This allows Italy to go wider as Wales trot back in unison, with a pull-back play utilising both Allan and Canna to whip the ball wide at speed. Luca Morisi is the widest man, and does well to stay infield as the drift defence comes across, but a little fumble is toed into touch by a support player and Wales will throw the lineout.

Harry Latham-Coyle1 February 2020 15:20

43 minutes

Wales win another lineout on the opposite touchline. A throw to the front is popped back into the hands of Ken Owens, who is able to bash through Leonardo Sarto and towards the Italian 22.

Alun Wyn Jones arrives on the rumble, but is stood up in the tackle by Jake Polledri who then rakes the ball away from the lock. It is rare you see the veteran manhandled in such a manner. Italy clear.

Harry Latham-Coyle1 February 2020 15:22

45 minutes

Wales come again, but they are just struggling to get going here. Wyn Jones is isolated on the charge and the supporting of Alun Wyn Jones and Jake Ball are late to the party. Their combined mass is considerable but unable to shift a pair of Italian front-rowers off the bowl of punch. Penalty to Italy.

Harry Latham-Coyle1 February 2020 15:23

46 minutes

Italy make a mess of their possession and Wales will feed a scrum on the right.

Italy take the opportunity to change their props. Danilo Fishetti and Marco Riccioni are brought on, while Marco Lazzaroni has arrived in the second row, too.
