Put into bat in a stop-start match, India posted a commanding 336-5 with Rohit Sharma (140) smashing his second century of the tournament.
Skipper Virat Kohli (77) and KL Rahul (57) also got fifty but Mohammad Amir's (3-47) tight death-overs spell denied India a 350-plus total in the sold out contest between the arch-rivals.
A century stand between Fakhar Zaman (62) and Babar Azam (48) kept alive Pakistan's hopes until they suffered a batting collapse and finished on 212-6 in 40 overs chasing a revised target of 302.
Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Vijay Shankar claimed two wickets each for India who now have a 7-0 record against Pakistan in World Cup.
37.4 Pakistan 192-6 Imad Wasim 34 Shadab Khan 13
KL Rahul drops an easy catch! Shadab lifts a shot high to the leg side and Rahul looks certain to take it. But it spills out of his hands. India, understandably, don't look particularly enthusiastic about having to play five more overs.
39.0 Pakistan 208-6 Imad Wasim 44 Shadab Khan 18
Wasim's cameo towards the end of this innings is one positive for Pakistan to take from another disappointing defeat. He's batted very well and hits another powerful drive down the ground in the penultimate over. Then he guides one to the third man boundary, before knocking a free hit for a single.
India win by 89 runs (DLS)
That's it! A bizarre ending to a rain-interrupted game. In the end, though, India's victory had been inevitable for some time. A dominant display with the bat, and some equally impressive bowling, takes India closer to a place in the semi-finals.
