Put into bat in a stop-start match, India posted a commanding 336-5 with Rohit Sharma (140) smashing his second century of the tournament.
Skipper Virat Kohli (77) and KL Rahul (57) also got fifty but Mohammad Amir's (3-47) tight death-overs spell denied India a 350-plus total in the sold out contest between the arch-rivals.
A century stand between Fakhar Zaman (62) and Babar Azam (48) kept alive Pakistan's hopes until they suffered a batting collapse and finished on 212-6 in 40 overs chasing a revised target of 302.
Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya and Vijay Shankar claimed two wickets each for India who now have a 7-0 record against Pakistan in World Cup.
21.0 Pakistan 95-1 Babar Azam 35 Fakhar Zaman 51
A good recovery from Chahal to allow Pakistan only two more runs from the remaining five balls.
21.4 Pakistan 102-1 Babar Azam 35 Fakhar Zaman 55
Another well-timed sweep from Fakhar clears the infield and goes for four. He's adjusted well to India's two spinners.
22.0 Pakistan 103-1 Babar Azam 38 Fakhar Zaman 56
The earlier lbw appeal that India chose not to appeal proved to be a missed opportunity. On first viewing, it appeared to hit the bat. But replays show it was pad first.
23.0 Pakistan 113-1 Babar Azam 46 Fakhar Zaman 58
The spinners, so economical early on, have started to leak some runs. Babar goes big with a slog sweep, smashing it 88 metres into the crowd. Pakistan take ten off the over and Babar and Fakhar bring up the 100 partnership.
24.0 Pakistan 117-2
WICKET! Babar (48) b Kuldeep
What a beauty! A brilliant bit of leg-spin from Kuldeep to bowl Babar, who's beaten all ends up by that! That's the breakthrough India needed, with Pakistan's No.3 on the verge of a steady half century.
25.0 Pakistan 126-2 Mohammad Hafeez 7 Fakhar Zaman 62
Hafeez is the next man in for Pakistan and he's clearly got no intention of hanging about. He picks up a quick single and then smashes the last ball of Chahal's over into the stands.
25.2 Pakistan 126-3
WICKET! Fakhar (62) b Kuldeep c Chahal
Big wicket! Kuldeep strikes again, this time floating one in and tempting Fakhar into a speculative sweep shot. He gets it wrong and picks out Chahal in the field. A good knock from Fakhar, but Pakistan are in real trouble now.
26.0 Pakistan 126-3 Mohammad Hafeez 7 Sarfaraz Ahmed 0
Excellent bowling from Kuldeep. He's been the main man for India so far. Captain Sarfaraz is next in for Pakistan, and he needs to put in a big performance.
It's getting very dark at Old Trafford, so some more rain might be on the way.
26.5 Pakistan 129-4
WICKET! Hafeez (9) b Pandya c Shankar
Pakistan are falling apart! Hafeez, keen to up the run rate, flicks one away off his pads but sends the ball straight down the throat of Shankar at square leg.
