After misadventures against Pakistan and Sri Lanka, England ran aground when chasing for the third time in the tournament, dismissed for an error-strewn 221.
With India and New Zealand still to play, there is now minimal leeway if the world's number one side are to reach the semi-finals of their own competition.

Damp turf clogs the studs on the bottom of Ben Stokes' boot and he removes the moist grass with a stud key as more sandpaper is fetched to firm up the foot marks.
That's a nice ball - fizzing past the outside edge from a length as Finch is drawn into a false shot for the first time in a while.

Usman Khawaja survives as Jos Buttler fails to gather an Adil Rashid google that should have sent the Australian left-hander back to the hutches stumped.

Khawaja isn't picking Rashid. He's trying to use his feet to combat his uncertainty over the direction of the ball's turn but so far unable to unfurl an attacking stroke from a forward charge.
The sweep is his safest stroke and a decent bet against a spinner bowling nicely and turning it both ways. He collects two from his latest effort off the top edge.

A full-length diving stop on the cover boundary from Jofra Archer saves two but Ben Stokes is still annoyed by the Sussex man's perceived lack of urgency in getting the ball in, despite Australia's indecision between the wickets preventing a third. Stokes is a little fired up. Never a bad thing with the combative all-rounder often at his best when the red mist starts to descend.
A deceptive full slower ball, quick bouncer combination produces two dots to close another very good over from Stokes.
32.0 - Australia 173-1, A Finch 92, U Khawaja 23, A Rashid 0-41 (8)
50 partnership up and a shackle-breaking cover drive for four from Aaron Finch, who has become a touch gun-shy in sight of a century. That's him into the 90s.

OUT! Through him! Khawaja is bowled by Stokes!
Full, straight, perhaps a bit of in-swing and Stokes gets the breakthrough! A wristy shot of utter nothingness from Khawaja, playing right round a middle-stump half-volley that should really have been driven back towards the bowler and hearing the sickening crunch of a pegged-back middle stump. 90mph from Stokes! Serious heat!
