The Open Championship in numbers

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Open Championship is upon us once again.

The oldest tournament in golf returns to Carnoustie, one of the most fearsome courses on the rotation, for what promises to be a true test of the golfing elite. The weather won't help either. After a hot summer the Angus course is baked to a crisp giving even the tour's shortest hitters a chance to blast their way around this week. But watch out for those fairway bunkers.

World number one Dustin Johnson, defending champion Jordan Spieth and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy all hoping to be in contention come the back nine on Sunday. Don't rule out a charge from Tiger Woods either with the course conditions playing into the favour of the 14-time major winner.

We will have all the latest news, scores, updates and more from our man on the course, Ed Malyon, plus analysis from elsewhere right here.

Jordan Spieth has found the burn on 18! An awful drive from Spieth to the right, and he'll have to scramble to salvage anything.

Marc Leishman makes his third birdie in four holes, and he is another to start fast. -3 after six. Ryan Moore drops a shot on the ninth and is out in 33.

Jordan Spieth's par putt doesn't come back and he'll finish at one-over after a 72. A streaky round that looked to be going well but four dropped shots in his last four holes and he finishes off the pace.

74 for Kiradech Aphibarnrat and 72 for Justin Rose.

The last time that The Open was held at Carnoustie was in 2007, and the winner that year was Padraig Harrington, kicking off his golden spell of three majors in little more than a year.

The 46-year-old has just teed off alongside two-time Masters winner Bubba Watson and Matt Wallace, who is on his Open debut but has two wins in 2018.

I mentioned Zach Johnson earlier, and the American has just chipped in for an eagle-three at the 6th hole.

He's now three-under.

Rickie Fowler notches a birdie at 18, which have been a rare breed today.

A 70 for Fowler.

Marc Leishman continues to find the hole. Another good putt, another birdie. -4 after eight holes for the Australian. Tied for second.

My word! Brooks Koepka just drove the first green! 396 yards on the card!

The back-to-back U.S. Open winner is the only multiple major champion since the 2015 Open, and ranks 1st in score to par, birdies/eagles per round and rounds of 68 or better in that time.

Contender.

Sergio Garcia is just off the fairway on the 1st. His natural game should translate well here, as it did in 2007.

Harry Latham-Coyle19 July 2018 15:17

Tiger time. On to the first tee walks Woods, and with conditions echoing those in which he won at Royal Liverpool in 2006, could he emerge with an unlikely victory?

Iron off the tee, middle of the fairway.
