Ryder Cup 2018: Europe on top after day one

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Europe seized control of the 2018 Ryder Cup on a thrilling second day in Paris.

The hosts took the morning fourballs 3-1 before keeping that advantage in the afternoon foursomes to take what could prove a decisive 10-6 lead into the final day.

Here's how it played out:

Who's playing?

Some of the very best golfers on the planet. Tiger Woods leads the American team while new world number one Justin Rose is Europe's leading light.

Who's going to win?

USA Evens

Europe 5/4

Draw 11/1

Garcia & McIlroy (3UP) vs Koepka & Finau

Sergio Garcia is such a leader for the Europeans and although we hear a lot about his locker room team talks, he's making a big difference for Rory out there.

McIlroy's hit a huge push off the tee and it's flown out of bounds at the seventh and he's angry with himself. Garcia hugs him from behind and massages his shoulders with a chuckle. What a man.

Fleetwood & Molinari (2UP) vs Woods & Reed

Another cracker from Tommy Fleetwood and Patrick Reed's looking agitated out there. The Englishman's approach is well within birdie range and Reed has to do something because Woods is an acre away on the green. He sidles up to Woods' ball. Captain America has lost his cape.

Poulter & Rahm vs Spieth & Thomas (A/S)

And we're back to all square in the final match. Both Americans found the rough and neither can make the green in two. Both up-and-down opportunities are missed so Poulter's par puts things on even keel.

Fleetwood & Molinari (2UP) vs Woods & Reed

A rare miss from Fleetwood on that short putt and it's a let off really but still a half.

Garcia & McIlroy (3UP) vs Koepka & Finau

Ed Malyon on the course:

McIlroy and Garcia pulling away from the hapless Finau and Koepka and Sergio now needs a big putt to win this hole after Koepka puts a long, long putt within inches. Garcia goes closer, and that's a tap-in to halve.

Casey & Hatton (2UP) vs Johnson & Fowler

We have a cushion! Paul Casey is playing brilliant golf and Hatton's back-up ain't half bad either. It's a putt from nowhere at the sixth from the former for birdie and Johnson, who's only good for gimmes on the green at the moment, misses a 10 footer for the half.

Casey & Hatton (2UP) vs Johnson & Fowler

Ed Maylon has been following the hapless American:

Dustin Johnson's contribution to the American effort this morning is.... well, he's keeping Rickie Fowler company. Fowler has provided three birdies to that pair's cause this morning, winning a single hole, while Johnson has been a spectator. A spectator with a brilliant view, but still a spectator.

Casey & Hatton (2UP) vs Johnson & Fowler

Ed Maylon:

By the way, in the same match Paul Casey has five birdies from six holes. Fowler doing well to keep the US within touching distance at only two down.

Garcia & McIlroy (4UP) vs Koepka & Finau

Rory McIlroy reads his monster putt like a psychic. He's back to his very best at the moment. Finau's got a 10 footer for par and it slips by on the low side. It's another hole to the Europeans and they've only played eight holes.
