The great Eliud Kipchoge was shockingly beaten at the 127th running of the Boston Marathon as defending champion Evans Chebet brilliantly retained his men’s elite title.
The world’s oldest annual marathon event once again delivered high drama as world record holder Kipchoge was stunningly dropped around the 20-mile mark and Chebet then opened up a lead over the chasing pack on the iconic Heartbreak Hill.
The Kenyan held off the challenge of Gabriel Geay and his training partner Benson Kipruto to finish with a time of 2:05:54 and become the first man since 2008 to retain the Boston Marathon elite men’s title.
This year’s edition held special significance as it is the 10th anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, a domestic terrorist attack in 2013 that saw three people killed and hundreds injured. For a marathon that is fittingly held on Patriots’ Day in the United States, the bombing was remembered and those killed were commemorated with a military march before the racing began.

The women’s wheelchair leader, Susannah Scaroni, stops to make some adjustments to a wheel. It’s a quick fix, though, and she is back on the road.
That delay shouldn’t be too costly but it’s one she won’t be overly happy about.
Up ahead in the men’s wheelchair race Marcel Hug continues to dominate as he approaches the halfway stage.

Men’s race begins!
Eliud Kipchoge has to settle for the No. 2 jersey today with defending Boston Marathon winner Evans Chebet getting the No. 1 billing.
Kipchoge and Chebet are both at the front of the field as the runners head onto the course.

Marcel Hug has passed the 10km marker in the men’s wheelchair race and leads the rest of the field by nearly two minutes. That’s unreal.
There’s a surprise in the women’s race too.
Susannah Scaroni of the United States has opened up a lead of 20 seconds, leaving the four-time Boston winner Manuela Schär back in third at this stage.
Kipchoge unsure what to expect from Boston Marathon
The Boston Marathon with it’s plethora of hills is unlike most other long distance races such as Berlin or London which are incredible flat and allow for world record times.
The Men’s current world record holder Eliud Kipchoge has never raced in Boston but at 38-years-old will make his debut later today.
“I don’t know what will happen at 10, 15, 25 kilometers,” he said during an interview with The New York Times, “It’s a huge experience and a different experience than many other marathons. That’s what makes me nervous.
“I think Boston is like the Olympics, it’s a new environment to me. Well-selected people. It’s like a championship race.”

In the men’s wheelchair race, Marcel Hug has moved away from the field quickly, opening up a 30-second lead after the first five kilometres.
The women’s race is closer with a pack of five racers together near the front of the field.

The women’s wheelchair racers are now underway as well setting off just a few minutes behind the men.
Three-time defending champion Manuela Schar of Switzerland leads the field with the five-time winner Tatyana McFadden of the United States racing as well.
Schar is the undoubted favourite to win this one though.

Here we go!
The Boston Marathon is finally underway with the men’s wheelchair race first off the line. Marcel Hug of Switzerland, a five-time winner and the defending champion, renews his rivalry with Daniel Romanchuk of the United States.
The duo were leagues ahead of the rest of the field when they raced in the London marathon last year, will they repeat those performances in Boston this afternoon?
