The great Eliud Kipchoge was shockingly beaten at the 127th running of the Boston Marathon as defending champion Evans Chebet brilliantly retained his men’s elite title.
The world’s oldest annual marathon event once again delivered high drama as world record holder Kipchoge was stunningly dropped around the 20-mile mark and Chebet then opened up a lead over the chasing pack on the iconic Heartbreak Hill.
The Kenyan held off the challenge of Gabriel Geay and his training partner Benson Kipruto to finish with a time of 2:05:54 and become the first man since 2008 to retain the Boston Marathon elite men’s title.
This year’s edition held special significance as it is the 10th anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, a domestic terrorist attack in 2013 that saw three people killed and hundreds injured. For a marathon that is fittingly held on Patriots’ Day in the United States, the bombing was remembered and those killed were commemorated with a military march before the racing began.

Bates hoped she could be in contention today and it’s so far so good for her.

Marcel Hug pulled out of last year’s Boston Marathon at the last minute with a medical issue.
Today, he’s putting on a show. At the 24-mile mark of the men’s wheelchair race, Hug is more than two miles ahead of his nearest competitor.

The men’s elite race has seen a group of 11 or 12 runners break away at the front of the field. Eliud Kipchoge is among them and seems to be setting the pace.
Back at the start Wave 1 of the amateur runners has just set off.

The only change in the men’s and women’s wheelchair races are the times that the leaders have opened up.
Marcel Hug’s wheelchair lead is up to six minutes whilst Susannah Scaroni leads the women by just 60 seconds at the halfway stage.

In a big contrast to the men’s elite race the elite women are choosing early caution as their modus operandi.
A huge lead pack went through the first mile in a steady 6 minutes 9 seconds.

The men’s elite race have moved through 5km and there’s a slight break up near the front of the pack. It’s taken them around 14 minutes to pass that marker.
Boston Marathon 2023
The elite men go through the first mile in 4 minutes 37 seconds.
That is rapid quick. World-record marathon fast.
They will eventually slow down on this hilly coutse and oo one is going to break a world record today but the quick tempo could break the field apart before too long.

Women’s elite race gets underway!
This field has serious depth and there are at least half a dozen runners with a realistic chance of winning the marathon. It’s arguably the most exciting race to watch this afternoon.
