From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Your support makes all the difference. All eyes will be on Lionel Messi as the 30-year-old Argentina star bids to lift the trophy for what looks likely to be his final World Cup tournament.
Group D kicks off with a clash against Iceland in Moscow, who are starting the tournament pretty confident after knocking England out of the Euro 2016.
Argentina should tread lightly though - Iceland could end up being the underdogs in the so-called 'Group of Death' as their track record has proven after drawing with Portugal at its European Championships debut two years ago.
With Iceland also reaching this stage for the first time in their history, they will be putting up a good fight to keep that momentum going.

What time is kick-off?
Argentina vs Iceland kicks off at 2pm BST.
Where can I watch it?
The game will be shown on ITV.
Odds
Argentina: 1/3
Iceland: 9/1
Draw: 4/1
Prediction
Argentina 4-2 Iceland. Both squads will be keen to get out of their groups, but it will certainly be entertaining to watch Iceland's star player Gylfi Sigurdsson give the Argentines a tough time.
But who do you think will win? Let us know by voting above.
27 min: Otamendi's header is looping and easy for Halldorsson to claim.
30 min: The game has had a bite to it and even the referee is getting involved now, inadvertently standing on the heel of Gunnarsson.
32 min: Biglia lines up a curler but the AC Milan midfielder's shot never looked destined to dip under the bar.
35 min: 10 minutes to go in this first half and credit to Iceland because they're more than in this game.
Argentina have had more of the ball but look particularly vulnerable at the back.
A very well poised game, I'd say.
37 min: Argentina probing and probing but Iceland are sitting deep and blocking any attacking forays.
Really interesting set up here.
38 min: Good work from Messi leads to a corner before the dramatics from Meza come into full force, desperately claiming for a foul.
40 min: A slightly better claim for a penalty there for Argentina as Biglia is tackled but it was clean and the ball was won.
Corner given instead and Iceland breakaway.
41 min: And it's a third penalty claim in a matter of minutes. The ball hits the hand of Ragnar Sigurdsson and goes out for a corner which is dealt with.
Argentina players demonstrated with the ref but VAR, it appears, decided it was not a deliberate handball.
I would tend to agree.
