From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Your support makes all the difference. All eyes will be on Lionel Messi as the 30-year-old Argentina star bids to lift the trophy for what looks likely to be his final World Cup tournament.
Group D kicks off with a clash against Iceland in Moscow, who are starting the tournament pretty confident after knocking England out of the Euro 2016.
Argentina should tread lightly though - Iceland could end up being the underdogs in the so-called 'Group of Death' as their track record has proven after drawing with Portugal at its European Championships debut two years ago.
With Iceland also reaching this stage for the first time in their history, they will be putting up a good fight to keep that momentum going.

Prediction
Argentina 4-2 Iceland. Both squads will be keen to get out of their groups, but it will certainly be entertaining to watch Iceland's star player Gylfi Sigurdsson give the Argentines a tough time.
But who do you think will win? Let us know by voting above.
9 min: DOUBLE CHANCE! A mess from Argentina leads to a double chance from Iceland.
Firstly, Finnbogason beats Rojo and sends the ball wide.
Minutes later, Argentina give the ball away from the goal kick and it breaks kindly to Bjarnason, the player who scored Iceland's first goal in a major tournament who somehow flashed his shot wide.
Close to Iceland's first ever World Cup goal.
11 min: Argentina go on the attack and clever work from Argentina's wingers leads to a corner.
12 min: Iceland clear away the danger but this game has a really quick tempo to it.
Great for the spectators, less so for those of us typing the Icelandic players names.
13 min: Nicolas Otamendi lines up a ridiculous shot from 35 yards which balloons well and truly over the bar.
You never know, I guess.
16 min: CHANCE! Well, it's only a chance when Messi is on the ball as he works himself a yard of space on his left foot and fires the ball at Halldorsson from outside the box.
The keeper palms it to safety but that must have stung his fingers slightly.
18 min: GOAL! (Argentina 1-0 Iceland - Aguero)
A goal made in Manchester.
A mis-hit shot from Marcos Rojo falls to Aguero in the box and the Manchester City forward cleverly makes space and smashes the ball into the net to score his first ever World Cup goal in his third tournament.
19 min: CHANCE! Messi flashes another oen towards goal just on the edge of the box, forcing Halldorsson into another good save.
22 min: GOAL! (Argentina 1-1 Iceland - Finnbogason)
What a response from Iceland! A great ball across caused chaos in the Argentina box and the move was just recycled once again, Sigurdsson flashing a second cross into the box.
Caballero got a tame hand to the ball but merely pushed the ball into the path of the Icelandic frontman who guided it home.
Game on!
26 min: Game has finally taken a breather with Argentina holding on to possession for the past couple of minutes.
