Jurgen Klopp apologises to Liverpool fans after Merseyside derby defeat

Liverpool’s slim Premier League title hopes faded further on Saturday when Michail Antonio’s late header earned West Ham a deserved point with a 2-2 draw at the London Stadium.

Liverpool, reeling from a 2-0 defeat at Everton in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday, again conceded first when Jarrod Bowen nodded home shortly before halftime, his 20th goal of the season in his 200th game for the Hammers.

The Reds levelled three minutes after the restart through Andy Robertson before the ugliest of own goals, attributed to goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, put them ahead after 65 minutes. But Antonio ensured the hosts took something from the game when he met Bowen’s cross with a powerful header in the 77th minute.

Liverpool remain third on 75 points, one behind second-placed Manchester City, who have played two games fewer, and two behind first-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand and a much-superior goal difference. West Ham stay eighth on 49 points.

Liverpool drop more points in title race as Jurgen Klopp’s farewell threatens to turn sour

Jurgen Klopp’s long Liverpool farewell is in danger of turning sour after a touchline row with Mohamed Salah during a 2-2 draw at West Ham which hammered another dent into their fading title hopes.

Salah, surprisingly left out of the starting line-up, was summoned from the bench by Klopp in the 79th minute after Michail Antonio equalised for West Ham.

The Egypt striker had a heated exchange with his manager with fellow substitute Darwin Nunez eventually stepping in to placate his team-mate.

It was an ugly end to another poor display from Liverpool, who could have at least temporarily moved level with leaders Arsenal with a victory.

They had come from a goal down, – a Jarrod Bowen header – to lead 2-1 thanks to Andy Robertson’s snap-shot and a comical West Ham own goal.

But Antonio’s header meant two more dropped points and Klopp’s final season in charge still fizzling out.

Jurgen Klopp, who did not reveal what was said during his touchine row with Mohamed Salah, told TNT Sports: “We spoke about it already in the dressing room. That’s done.”

“I’m not in the mood to talk about [the title race] to be honest or look at that at all. We had to win here, we knew that, and we didn’t, and now we have a little bit more time between now and the next game. We try to get the boys ready again and we will go again.

“Very disappointed, obviously. I think everyone can see that only one team wins the game, and that is us with the chances we created, with the possession we had, with all the things we did. It was a tough one at the end of a four games in 10 days period, but I think the players did really well.

“We just conceded out of nothing and need a few more chances and kind of scrappy goals in the end to score twice. When we are 2-1 up we could control it, and still as I said in a lot of moments playing really well but the final situation we didn’t take. That has been the story of the last four weeks.”

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, talking to TNT Sports:

“The result was not what we wanted. We came for three points. We played a good game, we controlled the first half and then conceded. It is tough to come back but we scored two goals and then we needed to stay more calm and keep the ball. We needed to play and not concede, but we did.”

Mohamed Salah had a heated exchange with Jurgen Klopp as he prepared to come onto the field during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against West Ham at the London Stadium.

The Egyptian forward was dropped to the bench having not performed at his usual high standards for Liverpool since his injury, and in the aftermath of the club’s defeat in the Merseyside derby on Wednesday night.

Salah was preparing to come on before West Ham’s equaliser, but after Michail Antonio’s header Klopp went over to speak to the forward - who raised his arms and appeared to argue back to his manager.

Salah was then told to calm down by Darwin Nunez, who pulled him away from continuing the exchange.

That’s the fourth time in five games where Liverpool have dropped points in the Premier League, following that draw against Manchester United and defeats to Crystal Palance and Everton.

It leaves them two points behind Arsenal and one point behind Manchester City in the table with three games to go, but that could become five points and four points by the end of the weekend.

City would have another game in hand after that, too.

And that’s it! There’s no time for the corner and the points are shared. It’s not what either side wanted, and Liverpool’s title hopes are dealt another blow. Surely that’s it for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
