Data preview as West Ham host Man City in the third round of the EFL Cup

West Ham brought Manchester City’s Carabao Cup dominance to an end with a 5-3 penalty shoot-out win over the holders at the London Stadium on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals.

Pep Guardiola’s side had won each of the last four editions of the tournament but after they were held to a goalless draw by the Hammers in 90 minutes, the tie went to spot-kicks.

Phil Foden fired wide from 12 yards with City’s first effort and West Ham remained perfect to secure a memorable cup win which occurred five years to the day of the last time the champions had suffered an exit in this competition.

Lucas Moura helped ease some of the pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo with the only goal for last year’s runners-up Tottenham in a 1-0 win over Burnley.

The Brazilian headed home a cross from countryman Emerson Royal in the 68th minute to settle a low-quality affair at Turf Moor.

Nuno still had to contend with discontent from the travelling faithful, who had chanted “Nuno where’s the subs?” before the breakthrough occurred but Spurs held on for a much-needed victory to progress into the last eight.

A much-changed Liverpool survived a tricky first half to beat Preston 2-0 with Carabao Cup specialists Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi on target.

Jurgen Klopp changed his whole XI from the weekend thrashing of Manchester United and saw the Sky Bet Championship outfit go close on various occasions during the opening half at Deepdale.

It remained goalless though until Minamino flicked home just past the hour mark and Origi wrapped up the victory with six minutes left.

Leicester required penalties to get past Brighton after an entertaining 2-2 draw on an emotional night at the King Power Stadium.

The tie took place on the third anniversary of the helicopter crash at the ground which killed the club’s chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four others.

Harvey Barnes provided the perfect start after the Foxes had paid tribute to Srivaddhanaprabha with a minute’s silence before Adam Webster and Ademola Lookman traded goals during first-half stoppage-time.

Brighton forward Enock Mwepu ensured there was another twist in the clash with a second equaliser with 71 minutes on the clock but he later saw his spot-kick saved by Danny Ward in the shoot-out with Neal Maupay also firing over as Leicester triumphed 4-2 on penalties.

Brentford claimed a first ever victory at Stoke after Sergi Canos and Ivan Toney repaid the faith of their manager with goals in a 2-1 victory.

The duo were two of the three players who retained their starting berth from the defeat to Leicester and netted in the first half to put the Bees in control.

Former Brentford player Romaine Sawyers reduced the deficit after the break but Thomas Frank’s men held on to win and break their duck in Stoke, which put them into the last eight of the competition for the second year in a row.

34 mins: Mahrez, De Bruyne and Palmer quickly pass the ball long the front edge of the box before slotting Walker in on the overlap. He attempts to pick out Marhez’s run into the six-yard box but the pass takes a deflection and loops up into the safe hands of Areola.

City recover the ball and can’t find a way through despite Palmer’s run across to the left. He passes the ball inside and City work it across to Mahrez who, like Gundogan a few minutes earlier, belts a shot over the goal.

West Ham 0 - 0 Man City

28 mins: There’s a bit in this game. City are dominating possession and regularly challenging the West Ham backline but they’ve only managed one decent effort at goal. For their part when West Ham maintain pressure high in the final third City have looked vulnerable, the Hammers just need to take their chances if and when they come.

25 mins: SAVE! Fernandinho passes the ball up to Sterling who flicks a pass round the corner and into the feet of De Bruyne. Zinchenko flies up the left wing and receives the ball before swinging a deep cross into the box. Mahrez brings it under control, shimmies around Cresswell and gives the ball to Palmer who lets it roll across to his left foot before striking one at goal! Areola seems to see it late but manages to stick out a leg and keep the shot out!

22 mins: West Ham win a free kick in a dangerous area just over to the right side of the penalty area after Andriy Yarmolenko is pulled down by Ake. 19 mins: Dawson belts a long ball up the pitch for for Johnson to chase down and he does brilliantly to keep the ball in play whipping a first time cross deep into the box. It comes to Masuaku who gives it to Cresswell. He lays the ball off to Mark Noble who runs onto it and drills one from range forcing Steffen to punch it clear from the centre of the goal!

Man City break though with Sterling driving through the inside left channel. He slots the ball into the box for De Bruyne whose shot/cross is blocked by a sliding Craig Dawson.

West Ham 0 - 0 Man City

16 mins: Man City regain possession and look to play the ball out from the back. Zinchenko knocks it to his goalkeeper who is hunted down by Manuel Lanzini. The West Ham forward almost makes a fool out of Zack Steffen but he rolls the ball over to the right and gives it to Stones mere seconds before Lanzini’s tackle arrives.

West Ham 0 - 0 Man City

14 mins: A long ball up the pitch comes up to Vlasic who lets it bounce and spins away from Zinchenko to get in behind. Ake comes across the pitch to beat him to the ball but his clearance goes out for a throw in. West Ham don’t make use of the ground they’ve gained and throw the ball back to their defensive line in an attempt to draw City into a high press.

West Ham 0 - 0 Man City

11 mins: West Ham are struggling to keep the ball with City winning it high up the pitch. Gundogan makes a short run into the box and is fed the ball but Johnson gets across him at the last moment to stop him from shooting.

At the other end of the pitch Johnson provides an option for West Ham on the right side. He looks for a cross but ends up running the ball out for a goal kick.
