West Ham vs Man City LIVE: Carabao Cup result, final score and penalty shootout reaction
Relive all the action from the London Stadium
West Ham brought Manchester City’s Carabao Cup dominance to an end with a 5-3 penalty shoot-out win over the holders at the London Stadium on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals.
Pep Guardiola’s side had won each of the last four editions of the tournament but after they were held to a goalless draw by the Hammers in 90 minutes, the tie went to spot-kicks.
Phil Foden fired wide from 12 yards with City’s first effort and West Ham remained perfect to secure a memorable cup win which occurred five years to the day of the last time the champions had suffered an exit in this competition.
Lucas Moura helped ease some of the pressure on Nuno Espirito Santo with the only goal for last year’s runners-up Tottenham in a 1-0 win over Burnley.
The Brazilian headed home a cross from countryman Emerson Royal in the 68th minute to settle a low-quality affair at Turf Moor.
Nuno still had to contend with discontent from the travelling faithful, who had chanted “Nuno where’s the subs?” before the breakthrough occurred but Spurs held on for a much-needed victory to progress into the last eight.
A much-changed Liverpool survived a tricky first half to beat Preston 2-0 with Carabao Cup specialists Takumi Minamino and Divock Origi on target.
Jurgen Klopp changed his whole XI from the weekend thrashing of Manchester United and saw the Sky Bet Championship outfit go close on various occasions during the opening half at Deepdale.
It remained goalless though until Minamino flicked home just past the hour mark and Origi wrapped up the victory with six minutes left.
Leicester required penalties to get past Brighton after an entertaining 2-2 draw on an emotional night at the King Power Stadium.
The tie took place on the third anniversary of the helicopter crash at the ground which killed the club’s chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha and four others.
Harvey Barnes provided the perfect start after the Foxes had paid tribute to Srivaddhanaprabha with a minute’s silence before Adam Webster and Ademola Lookman traded goals during first-half stoppage-time.
Brighton forward Enock Mwepu ensured there was another twist in the clash with a second equaliser with 71 minutes on the clock but he later saw his spot-kick saved by Danny Ward in the shoot-out with Neal Maupay also firing over as Leicester triumphed 4-2 on penalties.
Brentford claimed a first ever victory at Stoke after Sergi Canos and Ivan Toney repaid the faith of their manager with goals in a 2-1 victory.
The duo were two of the three players who retained their starting berth from the defeat to Leicester and netted in the first half to put the Bees in control.
Former Brentford player Romaine Sawyers reduced the deficit after the break but Thomas Frank’s men held on to win and break their duck in Stoke, which put them into the last eight of the competition for the second year in a row.

57 mins: Save! The second half is already more exciting than the first. Masuaku makes another cutting run into the box and Cresswell picks him out with a short pass. He shoots and draws a save from Steffen who pushes the ball over to Yarmolenko on the right side of the box. He brings the ball down and turns it towards goal only to be denied by by a sliding Zinchenko!
West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
54 mins: Chance! Manchester City almost take the lead after so nice footwork from Palmer takes the ball away from Soucek before he spins towards goal and slots a pass into the box for Gundogan. Gundogan shoots from a tight angle over on the left and fires his effort wide of the back post.
West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
51 mins: Chance! West Ham move swiftly up the pitch and try to find a way into the box through Cresswell on the left. He can’t generate enough space for an effective cross so plays it inside to Noble. Noble carries the ball up the inside left channel and slips in Masuaku who shoots and sends the ball narrowly over the crossbar!
West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
48 mins: A reminder that the teams can both make a maximum of five substitutions and if the game is level at the end of 90 minutes the result will be decided by a penalty shootout, which based on the first half action is a very high possibility.
Sterling works the ball into the left side of the box before knocking it back to De Bruyne. He shoots from the front left corner but Lanzini charges down the effort.
Second half: West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
Kick off: Kyle Walker is taken off at the break by Pep Guardiola with Joao Cancelo replacing him. West Ham haven’t made any changes. The home side get the ball rolling again with Lanzini passing it to Dawson who boots it long and sees Zinchenko head it out of play.
West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
It hasn’t been the most exhilarating first 45 minutes. Both teams have only managed one shot on target with City having a further three that went high or wide.
Chelsea vs Southampton followed a similar pattern yesterday. A tepid first half, though Chelsea scored in the last couple of minutes, was followed by an end-to-end slugfest in the second half which saw Southampton equalise and the match go to penalties.
Will we see something similar at the London Stadium?
West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
Chances have come at both ends but they’ve been few and far between in that first half. Cole Palmer and Nathan Ake have had the best sight of goal for City with Mark Noble and Nikola Vlasic coming close for the Hammers.
Half-time: West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
45 mins: Close! Mahrez flicks a free kick into the box for City and picks out Ake who guides his header wide of the back post! It was the chance of the half for the visitors just before the whistle goes to signal half-time.
Nothing to separate the teams then after 45 minutes.
West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
43 mins: Palmer has a shot deflected over for a Man City corner. Gundogan takes it but Dawson heads it out to Mahrez who fires the ball straight back into the box. Dawson is up again for another headed clearance but knocks this one to Gundogan whose final ball into the box is caught and smothered by Areola.
West Ham 0 - 0 Man City
40 mins: Close! West Ham are threatening City on occasion and it’ll come as no surprise that Aaron Cresswell is making things happen. He takes the ball on a swift run down the left side of the box and flicks a cross into the middle towards Vlasic. He jumps to meet the cross but Ake gets higher and glances the ball up into the air. Vlasic waits for it to drop but Steffen comes out to claim it.
