January transfer window 2019: Premier League transfer round-up

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Premier League's January transfer window is upon us with Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham all set to be busy.

Liverpool were the summer's biggest spenders with no fewer than four new arrivals. Goalkeeper Alisson was the headline-grabber with the Brazilian already proving worth every penny of the world-record fee the Reds shelled out for the Brazilian. Could long-term target Nabil Fekir join him next month? United got a couple of new faces in through the door in the summer but it hasn't made a difference with Jose Mourinho out and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in. Will he spend them out of trouble in the January sales?

Chelsea have made the biggest splash with the signing of Borussia Dortmund's Christian Pulisic while Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal could all choose to dip their toes in the water as they battle for an all-important top four spot. We will have all the latest news, views, rumours, gossip and done deals right here so don't touch that dial.

Sunderland striker Josh Maja has rejected a new and improved contract offer.

The 20-year-old, who has scored 14 goals in League One this season, is interesting Huddersfield, Cardiff and Crystal Palace.

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has confirmed Maja's change of heart after previously saying behind-closed-doors that he wanted to stay.

Crystal Palace midfielder Jason Puncheon is on the verge of a loan move to Huddersfield, Roy Hodgson and David Wagner both confirmed today.

The 32-year-old has fallen out of favour this season at Selhurst Park, and has only played 11 minutes of Premier League football.

Hodgson said: "I believe we are still waiting confirmation that the paperwork has all been completed and that the deal has gone through, but I don't expect anything to happen to prevent that from going ahead.

"Now when he has got the opportunity to get a first-team place and play on a regular basis, it would be wrong in my opinion to prevent him or stop him from doing that, knowing I haven't been able to offer him that position here."

Huddersfield boss Wagner also said he believed to get the deal done within the next 48 hours.

Tottenham's Mousa Dembele is being linked with a move away this month, and Beijing Guoan are the latest club to show their interest in the Belgian.

Dembele has returned to training following an ankle ligament injury, but the midfielder's contract runs out in the summer.

And at 31, Dembele believes he is now struggling with the physical demands of the Premier League, which has ignited interest from the Far East according to the Daily Mail.

Manchester United caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he wants to discuss transfer plans with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward but accepts that a plan would've likely been in place for months.

The Norwegian does want his say on who, if anyone, the club decides to bring in this month.

Toby Alderweireld, Milan Skriniar and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic are among the names to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Solskjaer said: "You don't just plan the next day or the next month. I'm sure they've got plans for this transfer window. It's probably been planned since the summer and the year before."

Stoke City have signed Ryan Woods and Benik Afobe on permanent deals, the club confirmed this afternoon.

Woods and Afobe moved to the bet365 Stadium on loan deals from Brentford and Wolves respectively in the summer, and the Potters have decided to sign both players to long-term contracts four days into the January transfer window.

Woods, 25, has made 21 league appearances in midfield, while former Arsenal and Bournemouth striker Afobe (pictured) has scored six goals in 26 league games.

Millwall have completed the loan signing of central defender Alex Pearce on loan from Derby until the end of the season.

Pearce made 48 Championship appearances for the Rams following his arrival from Reading in 2015, and is Millwall manager Neil Harris' first signing of the transfer window.

Subject to FA clearance, Pearce is eligible to play against Hull City in the FA Cup third round on Sunday.

Celtic have emerged as potential suitors for West Brom winger Oliver Burke.

The Scottish champions are one of a number of sides interested, according to Sky Sports, in taking the 21-year-old on loan, with Burke keen for some game time having not started a Championship match under Darren Moore this season.

Burke originally cost the Baggies £15m when he signed from Red Bull Leipzig in 2017.

After a potential loan move to Crystal Palace broke down, Dominic Solanke could be heading to Bournemouth from Liverpool.

The Cherries are in advanced talks with the Reds about a permanent deal for the 21-year-old, say Sky Sports, with a rumoured fee of £19m.

A move for Solanke would be Bournemouth's second piece of business with Liverpool during this window already, after Nathaniel Clyne joined Eddie Howe's team on loan until the end of the season earlier today.

One player who seemingly won't be leaving Anfield this month is Adam Lallana.

A loan move had been rumoured for the 30-year-old to improve his fitness as Lallana has struggled for first-team minutes this season.

However, Sky Sports report that Jurgen Klopp is keen to utilise the former Southampton man more as the season progresses, with Lallana likely to start in Liverpool's FA Cup tie away at Wolves on Monday.
