Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The January transfer window has shut and Premier League sides will have to make do with what they have until the summer beyond free agents.

Crystal Palace's late swoop for Michy Batshuayi on loan should provide intrigue with the Belgian flopping at Valencia and requiring a fresh start, and with the Eagles still to face Man United, Arsenal and Tottenham, he could still aid Chelsea this season.

Arsenal wrapped up the loan (with an option to buy) signing of Barcelona's Denis Suarez to give Unai Emery an alternative option, whilst Newcastle's club record £21 million move for Miguel Almiron should please Rafa Benitez after a turbulent few weeks.

Please allow a moment for the blog to load.

It’s promising to be a busy old day at St James’ Park, after Mike Ashley yesterday remembered that he is a billionaire with a Premier League football club to run.

Miguel Almiron’s club-record move is tantalisingly close – more on that later – while Monaco defender Antonio Barreca is expected to sign on loan.

Isaac Hayden is also expected to join Aston Villa today. The midfielder is determined to leave the club because of ‘personal reasons’ – which have absolutely nothing to do with the fact that Rafa Benitez keeps leaving him on the bench.

BREAKING NEWS: TOTENHAM HOTSPUR AGREE DEAL FOR STRIKER

Yes, Bundesliga side Schalke are poised to agree a deal to sign Vincent Janssen on loan, according to reputable news outlet The Sun. Got'cha!

The beguilingly useless striker, who has scored six goals in 39 appearances for Tottenham, had been close to joining Real Betis, although that deal supposedly fell through when Daniel Levy attempted to increase the loan fee by £1m. What’s he like, ey?

Ed Malyon:

Barcelona are desperately trying to sign French centre-back Jean Clair Todibo before tonight's deadline.

The Toulouse youngster is already confirmed as a summer signing, when his contract is due to expire, but Barca are looking to agree a fee with the Ligue 1 side that brings forward his arrival by six months.

Todibo, 19, is seen as a first-team player for next season.

Does anybody really care about Scottish football? You do, you at the back? Good for you! Here’s a wee transfer update just for you.

Hearts boss Craig Levein has revealed defender John Souttar is close to agreeing a new deal at Tynecastle.

The defender returned against St Johnstone on Saturday after three months out with a hip injury and has another 18 months to run on his current contract.

But Levein said on Thursday morning: "I don't want to say too much, but we're very, very close to John Souttar signing a new contract."

Hearts have already handed extended deals to Christophe Berra and Michael Smith and Levein added: "There are two or three others as well (close to agreeing new contracts) and that is solely based on trying to get this stability that we're after."

Valencia are set to sign Argentina international Facundo Roncaglia from Celta Vigo, reports Ed Malyon.

Playing in the Argentine backline isn't necessarily the biggest feather in your cap, especially not over the past few years, but Roncaglia gets a chance to play in European competition again and is jettisoned by struggling Celta.

Ralph Hasenhüttl has been speaking about Southampton’s transfer targets this morning. Here’s what he had to say. It involves cards.

There are always a few options that pop up... we are still busy and the last day is a day when everyone stops with the poker & the cards come on the table. It's not about wasting time then.

Everybody’s violent yoga enthusiast Aboubakar Kamara is closing in on a move to Turkish side Yeni Malatyaspor from Fulham.

The 23-year-old has been suspended by the Cottagers pending internal disciplinary proceedings due to a training ground incident last week.

Kamara was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm and criminal damage, with the forward now set for a fresh start in Turkey.

The player has landed in Turkey to finalise the move, which is reported to be a loan agreement until the end of the 2019-20 season.

Kamara helped the west Londoners win promotion through the Sky Bet Championship play-offs last season, having arrived from Amiens in 2017.
