Tottenham Hotspur gained a slender advantage in their League Cup semi-final against London rivals Chelsea as Harry Kane's penalty earned them a 1-0 win in the first leg at Wembley on Tuesday.
Kane's 26th-minute spot kick, his 160th goal for the club, means Mauricio Pochettino's side will be slight favourites to reach the final although there is plenty of work still to do.
The only goal of the evening arrived in unusual circumstances with referee Michael Oliver eventually awarding a penalty with the help of VAR after Spurs skipper Kane was adjudged to have been marginally onside before being taken out by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Key fact
Spurs and Chelsea are set to meet in a League Cup semi-final for the third time, having also done so in 1971-72 and 2001-02 - the only fixture to be played more often at this stage is Arsenal against Spurs (four occasions).
Kane was clearly onside, toed the ball past Kepa and was brought down. He was going away from goal but once the onside was cleared up (for what it is worth, the linesman got it wrong), there was no doubt.
Penalty...
GOAL! Tottenham 1-0 Chelsea (Harry Kane, 26 minutes)
Powerfully struck low to the slow-reacting Kepa's right, and Spurs lead.
27 minutes
It took a little while, but the correct decision was reached. Another tick in the VAR box.
A well-taken penalty by Kane.
29 minutes
Eden Hazard surges past two Spurs players in his own territory, and Harry Winks rather chops him down to prevent him profiting any further.
Booked.
A story in three parts as Spurs take the lead at Wembley.
33 minutes
Spurs haven't really found their offensive rhythm so far, with Dele Alli particularly seldom seen in forward areas.
A spell of attacking play comes to nothing. Chelsea look a little shell-shocked and need to retake their control of the game.
34 minutes
Again it is from a shot from range that Chelsea look to challenge the Tottenham goal. N'Golo Kante floats his shot into Paulo Gazzaniga's hands.
36 minutes
Eden Hazard is just starting to fizz a little.
He's clearly far-and-away Chelsea's most dangerous player, and he works space for a Willian cross but the Brazilian can't find a teammate.
38 minutes
There is a semblance of a bobble to the Wembley pitch, though it is far fro the state it was in the dark post-NFL weekend days of the Autumn.
Moussa Sissoko's square pass is behind Christian Eriksen with the Dane in good position to unfurl a shot. A shame for the hosts, who look dangerous on the counter-attack.
40 minutes
Outside of the post!
N'Golo Kante drifts past Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld to flick Marcos Alonso's low cross intelligently towards the near post, Paulo Gazzaniga nowhere as he nervously watches it kiss off the outside of the woodwork.
