Tottenham Hotspur gained a slender advantage in their League Cup semi-final against London rivals Chelsea as Harry Kane's penalty earned them a 1-0 win in the first leg at Wembley on Tuesday.
Kane's 26th-minute spot kick, his 160th goal for the club, means Mauricio Pochettino's side will be slight favourites to reach the final although there is plenty of work still to do.
The only goal of the evening arrived in unusual circumstances with referee Michael Oliver eventually awarding a penalty with the help of VAR after Spurs skipper Kane was adjudged to have been marginally onside before being taken out by Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Spurs and Chelsea are set to meet in a League Cup semi-final for the third time, having also done so in 1971-72 and 2001-02 - the only fixture to be played more often at this stage is Arsenal against Spurs (four occasions).

Spurs' narrower system allows space for full-backs Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso to get forward and provide support, and it is Alonso's presence that helps earn them their first corner.

Spurs are fortunate as a poor giveaway in midfield allows Jorginho to intercept, and he should really play in Callum Hudson-Odoi. The Brazilian midfield pivot overhits his pass, however, and it will be another goal kick.

Chelsea beginning to hold the majority in terms of possession, though they are giving the ball away with enough frequency not to have forced Tottenham into a defensive shell as of yet.
Good noise at a far-from-full Wembley with restricted capacities in place. A reminder, too, that VAR is in operation this evening and on hand to deal with any controversial incidents.

Harry Kane drops deeper and with his right foot bends the ball just beyond Willian to link up with the overlapping Kieran Trippier.
Trippier finds Heung-Min Son inside, but the attack rather breaks down and an overhit cross is claimed by Kepa Arrizabalaga emerging from his six-yard box.

With the diminutive nature of the Chelsea front-three, Tottenham are happy to let the visitors have the ball in wide areas in the knowledge that they will not threaten from crosses into the box.

The game has settled into that mid-half lull that often comes after an energetic first ten minutes.

Now Chelsea come forward, and Spurs stand off Eden Hazard, who stings the palms of Paulo Gazzaniga but does not truly trouble the Tottenham goalkeeper.
The home side are content to allow Chelsea such opportunities, and the visitors are showing few signs of breaching Tottenham's defence otherwise.

Harry Winks picks up the ball in the Chelsea final third and with a better pass could have freed one of three teammates making forward runs, but he skews his pass right and deep where it hops into the welcoming grasp of Kepa.

VAR!
The flag has gone up as Harry Kane bursts through on to a gorgeous Toby Alderweireld through ball, chipping over Kepa and going down trying to round the onrushing keeper.
Michael Oliver has his finger to his ear...
PENALTY! After a VAR review Kepa is deemed to have fouled the onside Harry Kane and a penalty is awarded to Spurs.
