Manchester United were knocked out of the Europa League by a rampant Sevilla who showed once again why they have won this tournament a record six times.

United were nervous all night and an early mistake from David De Gea and Harry Maguire gave the hosts the lead after just eight minutes. Youssef En-Nesyri pressing high to win the ball and tap it past the goalkeeper.

Lucas Ocampos believed he had added a second just before the break but a close VAR call ruled his strike out for offside. Sevilla didn’t need long after the restart tp score though. A corner ball came to Loic Bade who shouldered an effort over the head of De Gea to give the hosts a firm grip on the match.

Things got worse for United’s goalkeeper when, late in the game, he stormed out of his box, miscontrolled the ball and gave En-Nesyri an open goal to secure the win and a spot in the semi-finals.

Manchester United’s disastrous night is the nadir for calamitous pair

You come at the kings of the Europa League, you best not miss. Manchester United had Sevilla where they wanted them after an hour at Old Trafford. After 90, harrowing minutes in Andalusia, they were out of Europe, overwhelmed, overrun and overcome. After two late own goals at Old Trafford came early and late gifts of goals at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. After a game where United probably should have gone three or four goals up came one where they lost by three and were probably flattered by that scoreline. After a match where Harry Maguire was luckless for a Sevilla goal came a rematch where he was definitely, crucially at fault for one. After a season where David De Gea has at least showed glimpses of his best came arguably the poorest performance of his United career.

If a moment was required to epitomise United’s haplessness, still more than Maguire’s role in Youssef En-Nesyri’s opener, De Gea supplied it for the Moroccan’s second. His troubles with the ball at his feet were a cause of the first goal. They brought the last, the goalkeeper’s complete inability to control or clear a long ball instead teeing up En-Nesyri to find an empty net from 35 yards. That was United, failing at the basics, giving Sevilla an open goal. If the world’s most expensive centre-back was not the worst player on the pitch, it was because its best-paid goalkeeper was instead. All three goals could be traced to him.

But the men United needed to stand tall were instead cowed and broken by the ferocity of Sevilla and the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Like Brentford, like Liverpool, like Newcastle, this was another away day when Erik ten Hag’s team were found wanting in every respect.

Post-match thoughts of Erik ten Hag

It’s clear that when we make such mistakes, it’s very difficult to win a football game. We have to do better. That’s a demand.

“We were not composed, we were not calm. Once you beat the press, you have huge spaces all over the pitch. But we didn’t do it at the start and it was so obvious how to do it.

“There were bad decisions. We lost the battles. They had more passion, more desire, more willingness, for instance on the second goal. Then it is difficult to win big football games. It is a problem.

“We can’t run away from it but Sunday we have another opportunity to work on that. We have to step up and show more character and personality.”

Post-match thoughts from Owen Hargreaves

“Sevilla were brilliant today.

“The crowd were brilliant and they rose to the occasion. This place was absolutely bouncing. You can see why this is a fortress. It’s hard to play against them here.

“Manchester United weren’t ready from the first minute. They were second best in every phase of the game. This was lost in the second half at Old Trafford. They could have been up three or four-nil.

“They could have been out of sight. Instead they got punished tonight.”

Reaction from Paul Scholes

As part of his punditry with BT Sport former Manchester United star Paul Scholes had his say on United’s performance: “It was a difficult night for United.

“They didn’t handle the passion and just couldn’t handle the aggression of a brilliant Sevilla team tonight.”

Sevilla vs Manchester United player ratings from shambolic Europa League exit

A shambolic Manchester United side crashed out of the Europa League after a woeful defeat to Sevilla in Spain.

Harry Maguire was caught on the ball on the edge of his box as Youssef En-Nesyri fired Sevilla ahead early into the game.

David De Gea was then beaten by Loic Bade’s looping header as United conceded within two minutes of the restart. The goalkeeper then miscontrolled a long ball as En-Nesyri sealed United’s defeat.

United, who at one point were 2-0 in the tie, barely threatened in one of their worst performances of the season under Erik ten Hag.

Here are how the players rated as Sevilla progressed to the semi-finals:

Full-time: Sevilla 3-0 Man Utd (5-2 agg)

90+4 mins: There goes the final whistle. Manchester United have been humbled in Spain. Their European journey is over for this season.

Sevilla were just better than them in every single way tonight. Erik ten Hag will not be at all pleased with what he’s seen but he can’t be too critical as these players need to turn up against Brighton at the weekend in the FA Cup.

Sevilla go through having won 5-2 on aggregate.
