From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Newcastle make the long journey from the north east to the south coast on Sunday afternoon to face Southampton as both teams look to get a foothold in the middle of the table scramble.
Only two points separate the teams in the table but both will want to use this opportunity to distance themselves from any potential relegation scrap come the end of the season.

What time does it start?
The game kicks off at 4.00pm BST on Sunday 15 October at St Mary’s.
Where can I watch it?
The game will be live on Sky Sports Premier League with coverage starting at 3.30pm highlights available on Match of the Day 2 on BBC1 at 10.30pm. Alternatively, you can follow the action on The Independent’s live blog above.
It’s a big game for…
Virgil van Dijk. The wantaway defender is slowly but surely getting up to speed after missing preseason sulking about a move to Liverpool not being completed. He has earned back his place in central defence now and his eye is now on reclaiming the captaincy. Southampton will need a big performance from him against Newcastle’s attack.
Player to watch…
Ayoze Perez. The playmaker is Newcastle’s best attacking spark and works well between the lines. His running can trouble defenders and with the pace of Christian Atsu and Joselu around him then he will be instrumental in breaking down the Southampton defence. Rafa Benitez is a huge fan of his and it’s easy to see why.

GOAL! Southampton 2-2 Newcastle (Gabbiadini, pen)
75' - Manolo Gabbiadini lashes the spot-kick into the top right-hand corner and Southampton are level again!
78' - Matt Ritchie wants a penalty after his shot from the edge of the penalty area hits Virgil van Dijk on the arm from close range. He doesn't get one, obviously. Correct decision.
82' - Charlie Austin replaces Shane Long for Southampton, while Jacob Murphy replaces Christian Atsu for Newcastle.
86' - Ryan Bertrand gets in behind Jacob Murphy down Southampton's left wing and Sofiane Boufal finds him with a measured through ball. The England full-back drills a cross into the penalty area but Rob Elliott comes off his line to palm the ball away and Mikel Merino dribbles Newcastle out of danger.
Southampton are the ascendant side in the closing stages.
89' - Newcastle right-back DeAndre Yedlin, lucky to still be on the pitch, floats a cross in towards Dwight Gayle at the far post. The substitute striker gets decent contact on the ball with his left foot but his effort is blocked and the ball is eventually turned behind for a corner.
From the corner, Matt Ritchie picks out Florian Lejeune and his header looks destined for the far corner but Steven Davis is there to clear the ball off the line! That looked like a certain goal for the visitors and instant redemption for Lejeune, who gave away the penalty for Southampton's second equaliser.
90' - There will be a minimum of four added minutes at the end of the match.
90+3' - Jonjo Shelvey leads a Newcastle counter-attack and almost finds himself in on goal but Virgil van Dijk wins the ball back for Southampton at the crucial moment.
Full-time - Newcastle earn a late corner as Jacob Murphy's long-range, left-footed effort is turned behind by the head of Virgil van Dijk... but it comes to nothing as Van Dijk is there again to head Matt Ritchie's delivery out of danger.
The final whistle goes just seconds later and a draw is probably a fair result after an entertaining match at St. Mary's.
Stay tuned for reaction from both managers.
Reaction from Southampton players
Dusan Tadic: "I think second half we played more direct and we scored a quick goal. We conceded quickly and showed character to come back.
"In the last couple of games we've created a lot of chances. I think we can play much, much better and we'll show that as the season goes on, I think."
Manolo Gabbiadini: "I'm very happy but I want to win the game. I'm very happy. The penalty was very important but for the team, not for me."
