A scratchy start from Trent Alexander-Arnold could have seen the right-back sent off after he picked up a yellow card before fouling Anthony Gordon. Gordon made him pay though by picking his pocket and beating Alisson to send Newcastle ahead in the first half.
Minutes later, Virgil Van Dijk brought down Alexander Isak when he was through on goal and the Liverpool captain was dismissed through a straight red card. The visitors dug in deep to reach half-time before Jurgen Klopp made changes.
Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott brought Liverpool some much needed control but it was Darwin Nunez who came off the bench to first equalise then score a stoppage time winner to complete a fantastic comeback for Liverpool.

45+4 mins: Liverpool have the chance to challenge Nick Pope’s goal at the end of the half. Trent Alexander-Arnold swings a corner into the box and looks for Mo Salah.
Salah can’t bring the ball under control and Newcastle work it away over by the far post.
The whistle goes to end a stormy first half at St. James’ Park. Newcastle lead at the break and have a player advantage.

45 mins: Liverpool win a free kick about 30 yards out if not more. Dominik Szoboszlai takes a shot from the set piece and lifts his effort over to the top of the goal.

The need to get Trent Alexander-Arnold up the pitch leaves them vulnerable in defence though as there are a lot of space for Newcastle to exploit with their extra man.

39 mins: Liverpool are under real pressure. Newcastle work the ball out wide and slip it into the path of Almiron on the edge of the box. He takes a touch and shoots once again but this time the effort goes wide.
The Reds take their time getting the ball back in play which elicits groans and boos from the watching fans.

A short corner comes to Kieran Trippier who flicks the ball into the box. Trent Alexander-Arnold nods it over to Miguel Almiron who chests the ball down and rattles volley at goal.
Alisson manages to dive across and get two hands to the ball. He lifts it onto the underside of the crossbar then flaps it away. Massive save from the Liverpool goalkeeper.

33 mins: Liverpool have it all to do now. They’re all over the place and looked like deers in headlights at the minute as Newcastle’s aggressive and determined play is too much for them.
Luis Diaz is deflated as he’s sacrificed to bring Joe Gomez on as a Virgil van Dijk replacement.

30 mins: Isak was brought down just outside the penalty area and Newcastle have a free kick. Fabian Schar takes it and hits the wall but Sandro Tonali smokes the rebound at goal and wins a corner for the hosts.
Red card! Virgil van Dijk is off!

27 mins: Alexander Isak is threaded the ball as he drifts into the box in between the two centre-backs. Virgil van Dijk comes across and kicks through the forward to get to the ball.
The referee pulls out a straight red card and VAR doesn’t overturn it. Liverpool are imploding here!

25 mins: Mistake from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Newcastle take the lead!
Mo Salah sends the ball back to the defender who miscontrols the ball on his left-foot. Anthony Gordon presses and takes it away from him before flying into the box.
Gordon takes on Alisson and rolls his shot past the goalkeeper to send the hosts into the lead!

22 mins: Joelinton receives the ball in the middle of the pitch and spins away from Dominik Szoboszlai. He slips the ball to Sandro Tonali who whips it over to the right wing for Miguel Almiron.
Almiron is trying to get in behind the Liverpool defence but the pass is too heavy and goes out of play.
