A scratchy start from Trent Alexander-Arnold could have seen the right-back sent off after he picked up a yellow card before fouling Anthony Gordon. Gordon made him pay though by picking his pocket and beating Alisson to send Newcastle ahead in the first half.
Minutes later, Virgil Van Dijk brought down Alexander Isak when he was through on goal and the Liverpool captain was dismissed through a straight red card. The visitors dug in deep to reach half-time before Jurgen Klopp made changes.
Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott brought Liverpool some much needed control but it was Darwin Nunez who came off the bench to first equalise then score a stoppage time winner to complete a fantastic comeback for Liverpool.

67 mins: Dominik Szoboszlai recycles the ball after a Liverpool corner and looks to pick out Joel Matip. He thinks Sven Botman is holding him back as the defender rises up and nods the ball out again.
Nothing comes Liverpool’s way from the referee.

Once again, he is allowed to cut in from the left and run to the edge of the box but he slices a shot wide of the target after nailing it with some pace.

60 mins: Newcastle’s corner comes over to Bruno Guimaraes who is encouraged to shoot from the home fans. He does but the effort is nowhere near the target and Liverpool survive another attack.
Jurgen Klopp now makes a couple of changes and brings on Harvey Elliott and Diogo Jota to replace Wataru Endo and Cody Gakpo.

57 mins: Sandro Tonali is fed into space on the right wing and kicks the ball past Joe Gomez. He’s quicker than the Liverpool defender and carries the ball into the penalty area before sliding a pass over to thr back post.
Anthony Gordon is hovering around but Trent Alexander-Arnold gets to the ball first and pokes it out for a corner.

54 mins: Shot! Bruno Guimaraes brings the ball through the middle of the pitch before slipping the ball over to Anthony Gordon who dribbles into the box, cuts onto his right foot and drills a shot straight into the arms of Alisson.

51 mins: Chance! Newcastle should score. Anthony Gordon steps inside this time as the ball comes out to Joelinton on the left side of the pitch.
Joelinton pushes into the box before flicking the ball over Miguel Almiron. He’s got time to pick his spot but leans back just as he shoots and lifts the ball over the top of the crossbar!

48 mins: Close! Anthony Gordon is working over Trent Alexander-Arnold. Gordon brings the ball down the line and cuts it towards the box. He dances past the Liverpool right-back then pulls the ball into the middle.
Alexander Isak is there to turn the ball at goal but he doesn’t get the best touch under pressure and Alisson scoops up the loose ball.

Newcastle get the match back underway at St. James’ Park. They’ll be hoping to hang onto and then extend their lead against the 10-men of Liverpool.
