At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Newcastle United struck twice in three first-half minutes to beat Chelsea and advance to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. This was the second meeting between the clubs in just a few days and the hosts gained a measure of revenge for their Premier League defeat.

While visiting boss Enzo Maresca opted for heavy rotation, Eddie Howe named a strong Newcastle side, and was rewarded with a strong performance. Alexander Isak first capitalised on an error in possession from Chelsea deep in their own half, before Axel Disasi clumsily turned through his own net after his teammates fell asleep to let Isak latch on to a quickly-taken free kick.

It continues Newcastle’s pursuit of their first major domestic silverware since 1955, while Maresca’s alternative goals were perhaps illustrated by his decision to use just a single substitution, with Cole Palmer among those left on the bench. The host go into the hat for the quarter-finals.

We will have a result tonight, of course, with penalties available if we are all square after 90 minutes. VAR is not in operation.

The strength of that Newcastle side suggests that Eddie Howe is well aware just how positive a deep cup run could be this season. Their league campaign has rather stalled in recent weeks and silverware has been a stated goal of the club since their Saudi Arabian takeover - 1955 was the last time they secured a major domestic trophy.

Jadon Sancho, by the way, misses out on the Chelsea squad tonight due to illness. A shame for the winger having shown glimpses of his best as he attempts to rebuild his career in England after a difficult time at Manchester United.

It could be another significant night for Mykhailo Mudryk, though, as he tries to press his case to Enzo Maresca:

Newcastle and Chelsea’s routes to round four

Chelsea’s participation in European competition meant a late entry into this year’s Carabao Cup, and Enzo Maresca’s side have reached this stage courtesy of a 5-0 thrashing of Barrow in their sole fixture. Newcastle, by contrast, required penalties to knock out Nottingham Forest in the last round having secured a narrow win over Wimbledon earlier in the campaign.

Eddie Howe hoping to put ‘difficult phase’ behind Newcastle

Eddie Howe admitted his Newcastle side are in a “difficult phase” after the weekend league defeat to Chelsea, but insists morale remains strong within his squad.

Howe’s side have slipped into the bottom half and are without a win in five league games.

The Newcastle manager told Sky Sports after the 2-1 loss: “I thought it was a really high level game. I thought it was two really good teams. I thought it was a brave performance by us but the game was decided by a couple of moments.

“We were disappointed with the second goal. We gave the ball away, it cost us with the goal. It is an uncharacteristic goal for us to concede. I am proud of what the players gave today, if we continue to play as we are then the results will come.

“The attitude of the players is very good. We dug deep. We scored a really good goal and proved that we are that attacking force we can be. Sometimes you go through phases like this, we are going through a difficult phase in terms of results.”
