Newcastle United struck twice in three first-half minutes to beat Chelsea and advance to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. This was the second meeting between the clubs in just a few days and the hosts gained a measure of revenge for their Premier League defeat.

While visiting boss Enzo Maresca opted for heavy rotation, Eddie Howe named a strong Newcastle side, and was rewarded with a strong performance. Alexander Isak first capitalised on an error in possession from Chelsea deep in their own half, before Axel Disasi clumsily turned through his own net after his teammates fell asleep to let Isak latch on to a quickly-taken free kick.

It continues Newcastle’s pursuit of their first major domestic silverware since 1955, while Maresca’s alternative goals were perhaps illustrated by his decision to use just a single substitution, with Cole Palmer among those left on the bench. The host go into the hat for the quarter-finals.

Newcastle pounce on Chelsea errors to progress to Carabao Cup quarter-finals

Newcastle United scored two goals in three first-half minutes to earn revenge over Chelsea with a 2-0 win and reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Three days on from their Premier League defeat to the Blues at Stamford Bridge, the Magpies responded with an impressive first-half display.

Alexander Isak pounced on a mistake at the back to score the opener before Joe Willock’s deflected header was turned in by Axel Disasi.

Chelsea put in an improved second-half performance and had their best chance of the match when Joao Felix fired wide, but last season’s runners-up were unable to find a response.

FT: Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea

Two goals in quick succession were enough, then, for Newcastle to keep up their pursuit of long-awaited silverware, the hosts just about deserved winners on balance with Nick Pope and Lloyd Kelly doing enough to keep Chelsea at bay. Into the quarter-final hat they go - the draw will be made a little later at the conclusion of Tottenham vs Manchester City.

A Chelsea cross from each side has the same issue: too much depth. Marc Cucurella does manage to get his head to the second delivery but can’t do much with it, the ball lobbing behind for a goal kick as Newcastle close in on victory.

Against the post and away! Brilliant play from Newcastle, and a glimpse of William Osula’s talent, the young forward getting the ball out of his feet with a delicate flick and then rifling a left-footed shot against the woodwork.
